CINCINNATI, Ohio - Despite having the advantage at the break, the Bluffton University men’s soccer team fell in a hard fought battle with the Mount St Joseph Lions by a final tally of 2-1 on a rainy Wednesday, Oct. 28. The win bumps the Lions record to 7-9-1 and 1-6-1 in the Heartland Conference, while the Beavers fell to 0-14-2 and 0-6-2 in HCAC play.
The game opened with MSJ pounding the Beaver defense with pressure, including five shots in the opening 20 minutes of action. But the Beavers were able to withstand and at the 29:45 mark, John Eckenrode(Northwood/Millbury Lake) converted a feed from Appiah Adubofour (Kumasi/Ghana) to get the Beavers a 1-0 lead. The Lions continued to press, but the Beavers held that lead as they went to the lockerroom.
The MSJ pressure finally paid dividends early in the final stanza as Tyler Schumann buried one in the back of the net in the 49th minute to tie the score. The Lions then took the lead in the 60th minute on a tally from Colton Lipps. Bluffton was able to make inroads late in the contest as they were up a man after a red card in the 85th minute on the Lions, but it was to no avail as the Beavers couldn’t convert and suffered the 2-1 defeat.
Mount St. Joseph finished the contest with a 17-6 advantage on the shot chart, with each team putting just three on frame.
The Beavers wrap up their 2015 campaign on Saturday, Oct. 31, as they celebrate Senior Day and take on the Rose-Hulman Fightin’ Engineers. Opening kick is set for 3:30 p.m. at the Sears Complex. Come support your Beavers!
