Phenology, weed control and a spring flower walk
The Gardeners of the Bluffton/Pandora Area (GBPA) present a program of interest to gardeners at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 6, in the Bluffton Public Library, according to Victoria Zeits, president of the club.
The program, open to the public, is on phenology. That is the study of cyclic and seasonal natural phenomena in relation to climate and plant and animal life.
Allen County Master Gardener Volunteer Mark Simmons will explain how to use the on-line OSU Phenology Calendar to help predict when plant and insect activity occurs in our area.
For example, “When will the ragweed bloom and make me sneeze?” and “When will the Japanese beetles hatch and start eating my roses, apple trees, and raspberry leaves?”
April: Weeds – the Pirates in your Garden
Then, at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 3, the club will host a meeting on weed control.
Hancock County Master Gardener Volunteer Coordinator Bill Jones will discuss how to control weeds in your garden. He will review types of weed control: mechanical, barrier and chemical, and will review the pro’s and con’s of using these in different types of gardens.
