Former Bluffton instructor to discuss musical memoirs
Gerald Dyck, a voice teacher at Bluffton for two years in the 1970s, will return to campus Thursday, Oct. 14, for a presentation about his newly published memoirs, "Musical Journeys in Northern Thailand." Free and open to the public, the talk will begin at 7:30 p.m. in 1 Mosiman Hall.
The book, copies of which will be available for purchase, focuses on his adventures and discoveries in ethnomusicology in the Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai provinces of Thailand in the 1960s. In addition to discussing the book, Dyck, who recently retired from teaching in Massachusetts, will demonstrate musical instruments unique to Southeast Asia, including the khaen and the pin pia.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for our students and community to hear about the music of Thailand and to hear some of the native instruments being played," said Dr. Lucia Unrau, professor and chair of the Bluffton music department.
