70-foot retaining wall coming to Buckeye
A 70-foot retaining wall will be placed on the dike between Riley Creek and the Buckeye this month, according to Jesse Blackburn, village administrator.
Flood in recent years resulted in the creek overflowing into the Buckeye. The flooding has caused serious deterioration to the walkway between the two bodies of water.
Bluffton council discussed the wall last year, but opted instead to allocate funds on an also much-need new rest room at the Buckeye. That building is slated for construction in the spring.
According to Blackburn the wall is a project of J.D. Snyder Excavating. He said that stone will be delivered to a staging area at the Buckeye this week. The wall construction will happen shortly after that.
“The retaining wall will have a good appearance,” he told council. “The stones range from 20 to 24 inches tall."
Two photos accompanying this story show flooding and the resulting damage to the dike. These photos are from the Main Street side of the Buckeye looking toward Spring Street. These photos are from the June 2018 flood.
The third photo shows water pouring into the Buckeye from a summer 2015 flood. The “falls” is near the location of the photos from 2018.
