Bluffton University sports recap

Here's a recap of Bluffton University sports for the week:

Men's Golf

The Bluffton University men jumped into action feet first with a 36-hole day at the UNOH Invitational at Hidden Creek. Playing on one its home courses, the Beavers lived up to expectations with a flurry of rounds in the 70's and not a score over 89 all day

Freshman Evan Kujawa (Toledo/Whitmer) started fast with a 73 and he followed that up with a slick 78 on the final 18 to top the Beavers with a 151 for the day. 

Nathan Eberle (Grove City) was just five shots back with a 156 (79-77) rounding out the top four for Bluffton were sophomore Dominic Castelvetere (Ontario) and Clay Quellhorst (New Bremen/Memorial) who checked in with scores of 159 and 160, respectively. Everyone got in on the action as Bluffton fielded two teams for the season opener.

The Beavers will be right back on the links on Saturday when they make a short trip to Colonial Golf Club for the ONU Invite. They will tee it up with 18 holes on Saturday and 18 more on Sunday.

Men's Soccer

The Bluffton University men dropped a close 4-3 double overtime decision at Olivet College on Friday, Aug. 30, 2019. Olivet starts off at 1-0 while the Beavers fell to 0-1 on the season.

Eleven minutes into the game, sophomore Dalton Taynor (Troy/Miami East) knocked in the first goal of the season for the Beavers, assisted by Jacob Kiger (Groveport/St. Charles Prep). An Olivet tally by Dominik Burmeister (Pinckney, MI/Dexter) tied the game at 3-3 with less than a minute in regulation. Just short of finishing a second overtime, Olivet's Coda Mendoza (Oxford, MI/Oxford) knocked in a goal that would end up securing the victory for the Comets.

Junior Patrick Spillman (Anderson, IN/Frankton) and sophomore Bishop Williamson (West Liberty/ School Advertising Art) both netted goals for the visiting team. Freshman Tanner Newport (Hamilton, VA/Loudoun Valley) walked away with 12 saves for the Beavers.

The Beavers will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 4, when they welcome Great Lakes Christian for the home opener.

Women's Soccer

The Bluffton University women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision in their home opener against St. Mary's College on Friday, Aug. 30, 2019. St. Mary's started their season off 1-0, while the Beavers dropped to 0-1 on the season.

Junior Maddie Huffman (Maineville/Little Miami) fired three shots, all on frame, while sophomore Julia Gibson (New Carlisle/Tecumseh) and freshman Nina McGinn(Marion/Harding)  chipped in with three attempts each. Junior keeper Sienna Sullivan(Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) walked away with an impressive 15 saves for the Beavers.

St. Mary's held a 28-15 edge in shots, while the Beavers were called for two more fouls (9-7). The victors forced two more corner kicks (4-2).

The Beavers hit the road on Sunday, Sept. 1 for a 7 p.m. matchup at Oberlin College.
