A six-point buck crashed through the front window of Luke's Bar and Grill, North Main Street, around 3 p.m., spent 30 seconds in the bar, and exited quickly from an open back door that Luke's employee Roy Rayl opened for it.
Only two customers were in the bar at the time. According to Erin Burkholder, employee, "The deer jumped through the window, broke two tables, tried to escape from the first door (onto the patio), then tried the second door (onto the patio.
"Roy Rayle quickly went out the kitchen door, opened it and the deer escape."
Although the incident took only one-half minute, Burkholder and the other employees present during the ordeal said that it seemed like a lifetime. Other employees on the job at the time, in addition to Burkholder and Rayl, were Danielle Weyer and Heather Quinn.
One customer said that he thought a car hit the building or a gun was fired when the deer crashed through the window.
"Everyone was screaming 'Open the door,'" he said.
Esther Neff and Evelyn Sutter were playing cards across the street at the Senior Citizens Center. Neff said that she looked out the Center window and saw the deer heading north on Main Street.
"It all happened so fast," she said.
Several security cameras in Luke's caught different angles of the incident. Fortunately the deer picked a "safe" time for its visit. Had the deer arrived during the noon or supper hour the now-laughing matter could have caused serious injury to customers, who are usually sitting around the tables and window where the deer made its entrance.
