Wilda Stauffer Schrag was Director of Nursing at Meadows Mennonite Retirement Community
Wilda Stauffer Schrag was born March 4, 1922 in Milford, NB, to Henry and Sophie (Zimmerman) Stauffer. She died on Monday August 2,2021 at the Ebied Hospice Residence in Toledo, nine days after suffering a stroke. She resided at Maple Crest in Bluffton since September of 2019. Wilda moved from Kansas to Bluffton in order to live near her daughter, a granddaughter and three grandchildren.
Wilda and David were married on November 7, 1945. Her husband David died April 15, 2005. Wilda’s eight sibling preceded her in death.
Early in her career she worked in Gulfport, Mississippi, as she and her husband helped wrap up Civilian Public Service projects that had been started during World War II. Shortly after that she and David served with Mennonite Central Committee in Paraguay helping to settle Russian Mennonite refugees following the war. Wilda and David then lived and worked in Kansas and Illinois before retiring in Moundridge, Kansas. For much of her adult life Wilda worked as a nurse, primarily in nursing homes including 14 years as Director of Nursing at Meadows Mennonite Retirement Community, rural Chenoa, IL.
Wilda’s Bluffton area descendants are daughter Anita Schrag Lehman (George), granddaughter Andrea Goings (Tyson) and great grandchildren, Braylon, Arianna and Jayden Goings. She is survived by five children, twelve grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.
She enjoyed the friendships she made at Maple Crest, going for rides in the country to look at fields and houses, and visiting with her daughter, granddaughter and grandchildren.
She was active in the Mennonite Church all of her life. Her funeral will be at West Zion Mennonite Church in Moundridge, Kansas at 10:30 on August 11, 2021. Memorial contributions may be made to Mennonite Central Committee.
