University volleyball begins tourney with wins

The Bluffton University volleyball team found its mojo on Friday, Sept. 17, at the Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic. The Beavers routed Roanoke (VA) in three sets before taking down Washington & Jefferson in four. Bluffton improved to 5-7 on the season following these victories.

Sophomore Alysha Like (McComb) was on fire in the lid-lifter, slamming home nine winners against no errors for a shiny .409 hitting percentage. Junior Maddie White (Ashland) went 7-of-15 with no errors for a red-hot .467 attacking percentage. Kaylie Campbell (Camden/Preble Shawnee) and Chloei Barnett (Wapakoneta) both added seven kills for the victors. White stuffed the stat sheet with 18 assists, nine digs and two block assists.

Elle Price (Pocono Pines, PA/Findlay) handed out 13 helpers, while senior Brooke Kleman (Glandorf/Ottawa-Glandorf) led the back row with 20 digs. Courtney Weekley (Butler/Clear Fork) chipped in with seven digs for the Beavers.

Barnett took center stage against Washington & Jefferson in the nightcap, slamming home a career-best 14 kills! Campbell and Like smashed 10 spikes apiece, while senior Cassidy Posey rammed home nine winners. White and Price doled out 31 and 16 assists, respectively in the four-setter.

Kleman kept 26 balls in play against the Presidents on Friday night. White and Kia Rainey (Adrian, MI/Madison) waxed the floor with 14 digs each, while Price finished with 10 pickups. White and Barnett were both in on three blocks.

Bluffton will have a quick turnaround as the Beavers suit up for a 10 a.m. showdown with host Wooster before wrapping up the weekend against Geneva at 2 p.m.
