Scoles nets 4 goals to lead Pirates past AE
The visiting Bluffton girls soccer team fell behind early but rallied behind a singular effort to post a 5-1 win over backyard league rival Allen East Tuesday night.
Junior Sami Scoles fired in a single-game personal-best four goals to carry the visitors to the Northwest Conference victory.
The defending league champion Pirate girls improved their record to 6-2-1 overall and 4-0 in the NWC after the win.
AE fell to 2-4-2 and 0-2-2 in NWC play with the defeat.
Mustang Rilynn Jones netted the game's first goal in the seventh minute to give the hosts an early 1-0 lead.
But then Scoles and Bluffton roared back to take control. Scoles tied it on a goal from Reagan Mittendorf in the 29th minute.
Four minutes later, Scoles broke the tie on a feed from Allison Diller to put Bluffton ahead for good.
In the final minute before halftime, Scoles scored unassisted to put the Pirates ahead 3-1 at intermission.
Fifteen minutes into the second half, she found the back of the net for her fourth goal via another assist by Mittendorf.
Senior Mittendorf netted the last goal in the 61st minute to provide the final margin of 5-1.
The Pirate offense booted 30 shots, 13 of which were on goal.
The Mustangs mustered eight shots against the Bluffton defense, four of which were on goal.
Pirate junior goalkeeper Julia Mehaffie was credited with three saves, while the AE keeper made seven stops.
The Bluffton girls host unbeaten non-league foe Miller City (5-0-3) Thursday, Sept. 23. The Pirates then entertain WBL rival Kenton (4-5-1) Saturday at 11:45 a.m.
