Bluffton Public Library is bracing for another challenging budget year and is planning a variety of "fun"draisers. The first main event of the year will be an amateur chili cook-off on Saturday, Feb. 26, from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. in the lower level meeting room at the library.
Ten chili enthusiasts who are willing to "cook for books" are invited to compete for prizes and bragging rights. Dust off your favorite recipe or browse the library's cookbook collection to discover a new one. The contest is limited to 10 competitors, so register early.
The first two cooks to register will receive two tickets to a University of Findlay basketball game on Feb. 5 or Feb. 26, courtesy of City Barbeque.
"This friendly competition is being sponsored by Community Markets and is open to amateurs who live or work in Allen, Hancock or Putnam counties. Registration forms and event guidelines are available at the library. Registration forms are to be completed by Feb. 10,"said Cindi Chasse, library administrator.
Prizes will be awarded for "overall best chili" and people's choice. Samples will be judged by local "celebrities" via a blind taste test. Additional door prizes will be available for cooks and guests.
Guest tickets will be available for a minimum donation of $7 per adult or $5 for children under 12. Beginning Feb. 10, advance tickets will be available at the library's circulation desk at a savings of $1 per ticket - just in time to treat someone for Valentine's Day.
Each ticket includes a sample of each chili, bread, dessert, a beverage and an opportunity to cast a vote for your favorite recipe.
Local artists will provide entertainment from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.
"Whether you want to cook and compete, or just eat, you are bound to have fun," said Chasse.
Event proceeds will be designated to the library's youth and teen collections and will have long-lasting rewards. Call 419-358-5016 for more information.
