Art of Phil Sugden featured at OSU Lima gallery
Gallery opening and research talk
Artist Philip Sugden will be at OSU LIma's Farmer Family Gallery from 4:00-6:00 p.m., on Thursday, January 18, 2024, to open his new show Pages from the Manual on Dismantling God, an installation drawing series that explores Sugden’s experiences in Tibet and the Himalayas over 40 years. Each work has seven layered pages and incorporates current and ancient sacred texts. Sugden is a local artist and an assistant professor of art at Bluffton University.
Pages from the Manual on Dismantling God runs through February 29. Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday-Thursday, with further visitation by appointment through [email protected].
Prior to the gallery opening, Dr. Zachary R. Hines, a book historian and assistant professor of English, will discuss how fragmentology (the study of the surviving leaves of broken books) can offer us a framework for understanding Sugden’s Pages from the Manual on Dismantling God.
Dr. Hines will also tell the story of Lima’s own dark history of biblioclasm, the commercial fragmentation of priceless medieval manuscripts. He will speak in the Reed Hall Atrium at 3:30 p.m.
The gallery reception, show and research talk are free and open to the public.
