15 minutes with Katlyn Bates
You graduated from BHS this spring. Now what?
I've enrolled at Wright State University, Dayton, where I plan to major in nursing. I want to become an R.N. and then a nurse practitioner.
So, when is your last day at Common Grounds, and how much coffee do you drink in one day?
My last day is Saturday, Aug. 27, and no, I've actually never had any coffee in the two years that I've worked there. I do, however, like lattes.
What was the first thing you ever wanted to be when you were growing up?
I wanted to be a veterinarian. After that, I wanted to be a fashion designer.
You are very musical. Tell us about it.
I played the piccolo in marching band, the flute in concert band, I took piano lessons and for a while played violin. Now I'm teaching myself the guitar. I'm at the beginner's level on the guitar.
Name your favorite all-time movies.
Sleeping Beauty, Phantom of the Opera, Tristan and Isolde.
Tristan and Isolde?
It's about a couple of kids like Romeo and Juliet. It makes me cry.
And the worst movie was?
Cloverfield. Bad plot. Boring.
What's the worst grade you ever received in school?
(Long pause). In Math...C "ish" multiple times.
It's time to confess your most secret prank.
(Another long pause). I don't think there is one. (Pause). Except one time my friends and I TP'd someone. It turned into a water balloon fight.
Who were the friends and who did you TP?
Brittany Schroeder, Amber Henry, Liz Diller, Danielle Rhonemus and I went to Joel Groman's house about midnight when we were sophomores. Except I didn't know that Joel knew we were coming. Amber and I had no idea. He was waiting for us with water balloons.
How many pair of shoes do you own?
Twenty-five to 30.
How many tunes are on your IPod?
Around 2,000. It's pretty full.
Two thousand!
I get songs from my friends. Last week I bought 20 songs from I Tunes.
How about texting? How many times a day and how many people to do text?
I'd say about 100 texts to two different people. No, make those maybe 200 texts.
What do you say in these texts?
Well, random stuff. My roommate-to-be and I text. She asked me how are we going to store our silverware in our dorm room.
And?
We decided to get little plastic sets of drawers.
Where is she from?
Fredricktown.
Did you know that their school mascot is the "Freddies?"
I didn't know that.
Who is the all-time biggest texter you know?
Ashton Cluts. She can text five people at once.
Wow.
What classes will you take this fall at Wright State?
English, math, sociology, psychology and freshman seminar.
Did you have a book you were required to read this summer?
Yes. "Zeitoun." That's the last name of the person that the book is about. He's from the Middle East and he married an American. They moved to New Orleans and lived through Katrina. He stayed at home during the hurricane. It's a very good book. It's all about the problems he faced.
What are your favorite pizza ingredients?
Pepperoni, mushrooms and black olives.
When you get a tattoo, what's it going to be and where will it be?
Probably on my wrist or foot. It may be a Bible verse. It will be real small. Mom will kill me.
What's the most expensive book you've had to purchase for school?
My sociology book was $130.
Do you think that you will be the same person next year at this time that you are today?
I think that I will be.
Okay, let's talk next August and see if you are. Good luck in college.
