Women's soccer: Bluffton shuts out Ohio Christian 3-0
The Bluffton University women's soccer team allowed just two late shots in a 3-0 shutout of Ohio Christian on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011. The Beavers improved to 3-1-1 on the season, while Ohio Christian slipped to 2-5 overall.
Although Bluffton led just 1-0 after the first 45 minutes, it was apparent by the 15-0 shot disparity that the final outcome was never in doubt. Danielle McQuillin (Delta/Pike-Delta-York) put the Beavers on the scoreboard at the 32:34 mark thanks to a slick feed from fellow freshman Samantha Servizzi (Loveland/Milford). The home team put up six unanswered corner kicks in the opening stanza, but the score remained 1-0 at the break.
Just over two minutes into the second period, sophomore Aimee Whitmer (Tontogany/Otsego) fed it up to Taylor Fultz (Camden/Preble Shawnee) for a quick 2-0 advantage. Junior standout Maddie Moore (Berne, Ind./South Adams) connected with Fultz 16 minutes later to seal the deal and make it 3-0. Ohio Christian spent much of the contest with nine players in a defensive mode, making it difficult for the Beavers to find any seams to the net.
Fultz and Kourtney Lewis (Arlington/Riverdale) fired at will, putting up seven shots each. Freshman Kathleen Reid (Midlothian, VA/Manchester) finished with four shots, while senior Monique Devol (Lancaster/Bloom-Carroll) and sophomore Megan Moreo (Spencerville/Delphos Jefferson) both tallied three attempts.
Sophomore keeper Liz Webb (Ashland) came up with one save in her first career start in the net. Bluffton finished with a marked 35-2 edge in shots, including 16-1 on frame. Each team committed just four fouls and Bluffton forced all nine corner kicks in the match.
The Beavers welcome Mount St. Joseph to Bluffton for the first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference of the season on Saturday, Sept. 24. The match is slated to start at 12 p.m.
