VAN WERT - The visiting Bluffton High School girls basketball team edged Northwest Conference foe Lincolnview 62-57 Thursday night, January 23.

Bluffton improved to 10-8 overall and 2-2 NWC with the hard-fought road win.

Lincolnview also fell to 10-8 overall, and is 2-3 in NWC play after the defeat.

Pirate senior post Ayla Grandey led Bluffton with 24 points.

Elfrieda Martha Landes Ramseyer, a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother, caring nurse and exceptional educator, died peacefully on January 24, 2025 surrounded by her family. She was 90.

Elfrieda lived a rich life of service. Warm and kind, she was a great friend, always willing to listen and offer words of encouragement. She loved making meals for persons and families in need, and her children recall the smell of freshly made soup and bread many afternoons and evenings as she prepared to drop off a meal. She cherished going to coffee with friends and was well known as a sympathetic listener. She enjoyed participating in church choirs throughout her life, and was a bass in the Sweet Adelines women's barbershop chorus in Iowa for many years.

The daughter of a minister – she referred to herself throughout her life as a "preacher's kid" – Elfrieda learned from an early age the importance of helping others, serving as a community volunteer wherever she lived. She also moved with her family often during her childhood.

Each fall for nearly eight decades, Dick Boehr has reached for his Messiah song book to begin preparations to sing George Frideric Handel’s venerated oratorio performed annually at Bluffton College/Bluffton University. It never gets old for him. “As soon as you touch that Messiah book and feel how worn it is, you kind of get an emotional high,” Boehr said. “Things start to come back to you about the whole story of Christ’s birth and resurrection.”

The plain black book, well-worn and clearly well-loved, isn’t even Boehr’s first Messiah book. During his incredible over three-quarters of a century run, Boehr estimates that he has worn out three previous Messiah song books. His first book would have come from his father John or his Aunt Elizabeth.

It was Elizabeth who first led the family to Bluffton when she moved to become a professor at Bluffton College in 1918, and she started the family tradition of singing in the Messiah. Boehr recalls his aunt’s musical interests fondly. “If there would’ve been singing, she would’ve sung it,” he said.
