A chance meeting south of the border in the Baja coastal town of La Mision, melded the talents of these two stellar musicians known for their fiery performances.

Onalee Shepler

Onalee Shepler thought her biggest moment in sports was pitching a high school softball no-hitter against Delphos Jefferson.

Then came Wednesday, Jan. 11. Bowling in a Bluffton Southgate Lanes Queen's League Shepler bowled three games where she registered 35 out of a possible 36 strikes.

That translated to a series score of 864, which set a new women's high series at the Bluffton bowling alley. More importantly it was "that close" (one frame) to a perfect three games of bowling.

Dean Giesige, Bluffton Middle School principal, is on a magazine drive. He's not selling; he's looking for magazine donations.

Giesige told The Icon that the middle school (sixth-seventh-eighth grades) seeks used magazines from residents of the school district.

"We need them to help supplement our reading program," he said. "For example, we'd love to have used Smithsonian, Readers' Digest, National Geographics, even hunting magazines. We're looking for an assortment of subjects."

You were born in Maple Heights, correct? Where exactly is that?

Maple Hts. is a suburb of Cleveland on the SE side. Probably best known for its wrestling state titles under coach Milkovich. However, over the past few years it has become a football success.

When did you move to Bluffton? Were you and your husband, Bob, hired by BHS and BU, respectively, at the same time?

The Icon spotted this plate on Cherry Street in January. The plate is from Cuyahoga County. Maybe the driver stopped in for a cup of coffee at Common Grounds. Any thoughts on the meaning of the plate?

Just when you think you know everything there is to know about Bluffton, a photograph like this shows up.

Can you identify what's going on here?

This is a photograph of the "floating" pool that once served swimmers in Bluffton. It was constructed on the east bank of the Buckeye and then was moved to the quarry where it floated and allowed swimming.

Older Icon viewers with splinters in their behinds may be able to put a date on this photo. It's probably the mid-1940s.

We're all going fishing for Tom Augsburger this year. The Bluffton Sportmen's Club honored Augsburger as the number one tagged trout for the 2012 trout derby set for Sunday, May 6, at Buckeye park.

"Ole Augie" honors Augsburger, who has served as the club president for over 22 years. Tom is part of the first "father-son" team to share the number one trout honor. Tom's father, Ralph, was recognized by the club when it named the number one trout in his honor in 1983.

Some individuals walk into our lives quietly and unobtrusively, yet leave such an indelible impression that we feel their presence long after they are gone.

Helen James Minck was one of those individuals. When Helen died on Christmas Eve, I felt saddened that I'd never get to hear more of her stories, to hear her laugh. Yet her face and voice are so clear, so present.
