As we enter the new year, there are two topics that I would like to address in regard to Bluffton Exempted Village Schools. First, with the passage of House Bill 1 (HB1) last year, the state required school districts, starting 2010-2011, to offer all-day, every day kindergarten.
As is true for many outdoor sports enthusiasts, the snow, ice and chill of Ohio's winter has forced me indoors for my morning runs and walks. Running round and round on the local rec track isn't my preferred way to get in my miles, but I do love running in shorts and a tee shirt. To vary the scenery, I sometimes do my walk days at the elementary school where the halls are long and turns are less frequent than the track.
New York City's Department of Health issued new guidelines to curb salt in resident's diets today. Meanwhile, in Bluffton, Ohio, the village issued guidelines to keep salt off its new Main Street sidewalks. The low-salt diet is due to the new sidewalks placed downtown this summer. Salt and other ice melting chemicals may harm the sidewalks during their first winter. In the meantime, walkers take care on icy days and nights.
Bluffton has been fortunate in recent years to have a council made up of a great cross-section of the community. We have persons from several backgrounds, all willing to contribute to the discussions of where the village ought to be headed.
Here's what we can tell you about 5 LFD. The driver is a member of the AFL-CIO and is a Columbus Blue Jackets fan. Any other information provided by viewers is welcomed.
As bad as 2009 was, the Village of Bluffton's budget dodged the financial bullet in the year just past.
According to Nancy Kindle, village fiscal officer, Bluffton's cash balances decreased by $295,008 in 2009. The streetscape program was completed at a cost of $230,244 and $600,000 of the town hall debt was retired. Those figures were revealed at the Jan. 11 council meeting - the first meeting of 2010.
After working in the financial industry for over 20 years and recently becoming a Dave Ramsey Certified Financial Counselor, Beth Boehr-Miller, of Bluffton, has launch a new business venture-Beyond Budgeting.
The idea for her business originated out of a growing need for individuals and couples from every income level to get a hold of their finances and live in financial peace.
Would you be interested in putting something in the BlufftonIcon inviting people to send a birthday card to Mr. Frank Buckles (the last surviving U.S. WWI veteran)? Mr. Buckles turns 109 on Feb. 1.
I have a draft that people could sign and forward, if they are interested, and have attached it for you. I am going to get my church, the Boy Scouts, my place of employment (Lima Refinery), and some other groups that I'm involved with to print out copies and have them send them on to Mr. Buckles.
