August 5 Swiss Haus kitchen garden invitation

The Swiss Community Historical Society of Bluffton and Pandora will hold its third and final Summer Saturday event from 1:00-4:00 p.m. on August 5 at the Schumacher Homestead, located at 8350 Bixel Road, Bluffton.

Visitors are especially encouraged to tour the recently renovated garden. There will be docents available to point out and discuss the plants used by early settlers. Also featured will be a display of antique garden and grounds tools.

Earlier this spring, the Columbus Grove Creative 4-H club helped the society prepare for summer guests by working inside and out at the Schumacher Homestead. They assisted historical society volunteers in the kitchen garden and cleaned inside the farmhouse.

On August 5, there will be guided tours of the (air-conditioned) mid-19th century house, with many period artifacts, some original to the house. Guests may also visit the summer kitchen, workshop and barn.

Admission is $5 for those 17 and older; it is free for those 16 and under, and for members.

Anyone wishing to schedule a tour on another date may contact Susie Gratz at [email protected], or call 419-358-4822 and leave a message.
