The Bluffton University men's and women's track and field team competed in day one of the two-day Findlay Classic Invitational, hosted by the University of Findlay on Friday, Jan. 27, 2012.

Bluffton council will hold a special meeting at 8 p.m., Monday, Jan. 30, in council chambers in the town hall, according to Jamie Mehaffie, village administrator.

"The meeting has been scheduled for the following purposes: To appoint a new member to the village council, to consider legislation regarding an annexation, and to consider legislation pertaining to the adoption of the 2012 edition of the Ohio Basic Code," he said.

The council member appointment will fill the vacancy left when Eric Fulcomer resigned as a council member to become mayor.

Former Bluffton mayor, Fred Rodabaugh, will offer his observations on Bluffton over the past half century during the 7:30 a.m., Friday morning, Feb.10, Bluffton Area Chamber of Commerce breakfast. The event is in the Bluffton town hall.

Rodabaugh is a life-long Bluffton resident. He graduated from Bluffton High School in 1965. He attended Bluffton College and then served in the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam.

The Icon plans to release a second book in this series of Bluffton stories. The book is in the planning stages and will be released this fall. The second book's theme is Bluffton in the 1950s.

The Bluffton University football team is making strides in the classroom as well as on the field. Of the 24 seniors recruited by head coach Tyson Veidt four years ago, 100 percent are scheduled to graduate on time in May, more than 60 percent with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better.

In commemoration of the sacrifices of four armed forces chaplains during World War II, The American Legion will observe Religious Emphasis Week Feb. 1 to 7 and Four Chaplains' Sunday, according to members of the Bluffton American Legion Post 382.

Members of the Bluffton Legion Post will attend the 10:30 a.m. Feb. 5 worship service at First United Methodist Church, Bluffton.

Bernice Deerhake Gibson

Bernice Deerhake Gibson, 93, of Lima died at 7:05 p.m. Jan. 25, 2012 at Lima Manor. She was born Jan. 25, 1919, in Bluffton to Albert and Bertha Amstutz Matter.

On July 14, 1941, she married Robert Deerhake and he preceded her in death on Feb. 5, 1977. In 1982 she married Robert Gibson and they were later divorced.

Bernice retired from Triplett Corp. Bluffton. She was a 1936 graduate of Bluffton High School.
