Janis S. Gipson, 65, died at 4:53 p.m. Feb. 5, 2013, at Shawnee Manor Nursing Home.

She was born Nov. 9, 1947, in Hippo, Ky., to Raleigh and Trilbie Laferty Ousley, who preceded her in death. On Oct. 14, 1984, she married Bryson Gipson Sr., who survives in Lima.

Mrs. Gipson had been a nurse's aide at Lima Manor Nursing Home. She was a member of Mount Zion Old Regular Baptist Church, McGuffey.

Arthur Clase Immele, 98, of Tiffin, died Friday morning, Feb. 1, 2013, at St. Francis Home, Tiffin.

He was born Jan. 19, 1915, in Tiffin, to Joseph A. and Mary P. (Ross) Immele. He married Marian B. Kamp Sept. 4, 1937.

Survivors include one son, Robert "Bob" Immele of Glendale, Ariz.; two daughters, Margaret "Peg" (Ed) Murphy of Bluffton, and Martha (Ernie) Boyer of Lima; son-in-law, Kandy Matthew Cameron of Tiffin; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Paul Baransy will conduct Bluffton University’s Jazz Ensemble and Concert Band in the annual winter instrumental concert, at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, in Yoder Recital Hall.

The concert is free and open to the public; a free-will offering will be taken during intermission for music scholarships.

Film, food and entertainment are planned for Global Weekend at Bluffton University on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 15 and 16.

The weekend will begin Friday with a 7:30 p.m. screening of the 2002 film “Whale Rider” in Centennial Hall’s Stutzman Lecture Hall.

The Commons in Marbeck Center will host Saturday’s events. An ethnic meal will be served from 5-6 p.m. and an international variety and fashion show will follow at 6:30 p.m. A piñata will be available for children before the show, at 6:15 p.m.

Students in grades 8 through 12 have an opportunity to take a free ACT practice test Saturday, March 9, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Bluffton Public Library.

On Thursday, March 14, at 6 p.m., students and parents are invited to attend an "Acing the ACT" program to learn strategies for improving test scores. Students who have taken the practice test on March 9 will receive results as well.

Both programs will be held in the library's lower level meeting room and are hosted by Sylvan Learning Center.

The Icon welcomes Rachel Stutzman as a new columnist and blogger. She writes a blog titled "Small Town, Big World." It will begin to appear regularly on The Icon. Here's a link to her blog and here's her first contribution.

At one time, numbers scared him, admits Murli Buluswar, who struggled with math in the regimented learning environment of junior high and high school.

But he overcame that fear “one brick at a time,” he said Feb. 5 at Bluffton University, en route to a bachelor’s degree in economics from Bluffton, a master’s degree in economics and statistics from Auburn University and now, the position of chief science officer for AIG Property Casualty.

Krysti’s Music Studio may soon be able to offer music lessons for an entire orchestra.

This winter the studio, owned by Krysti Schey, located on South Main Street, Bluffton, has expanded.

“We added new teachers, Rebekah Ricker, Leah Baugh, Florin Simioanca and Tori Watkins,” said Schey. “In addition, we’ve added three new practice rooms, so we can do more lessons at the same time.”

With the new teachers, Krysti’s has expanded the type of instrument lessons offered.
