FROM THE ADA ICON - After nearly three decades of watching others turn his corn into tortillas and tortilla chips, Hardin County farmer Denny Hensel is doing it himself, in Ada.
His Harvest Pride Tortilla Chips were featured in the Hardin County Chamber and Business Alliance’s annual Member Appreciation Day luncheon on Friday, at the chamber’s headquarters in Kenton. Chamber officials used the occasion to announce a new Farm-to-Table marketing initiative that they hope will spawn similar agribusiness efforts here.
The memorial service for Genevieve E. Fast who died May 17, 2015, that was scheduled for Saturday Aug. 1, been re-scheduled.
The Memorial Service will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday Oct. 31, at First Mennonite Church, Bluffton. Arrangements are under the direction of Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services, Bluffton.
Plans are underway for a 5K Glow Run at Pandora Missionary Church on Saturday, July 25, at 9:40 p.m. The theme of this year’s race is, “Light Up the Dark,” and will feature various glow aspects along the course, including luminaries, glow attire, and illuminated Bible verses.
“This event is truly unique. It is intended to be fun while at the same time serving a purpose—bringing God’s light and love to our community and those around us,” explains Dan Gratz, coordinator of the event.
BFR will host an overnight softball tournament held in Cairo on Friday, Aug. 14. Games start at 7 p.m. Cost per team is $200 and the registration deadline is Saturday, Aug. 1.
Players must be 18 or older by June 30. At the registration, teams must provide payment and a team roster.

BFR will host a best-of-three adult coed sand volleyball tournament Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Bluffton University sand volleyball courts. Games begin at noon. Teams must have at least three women on the court at all times. Rally scoring takes place and team members must be 18 as of Aug. 1. Cost per team is $100 and the registration deadline is Aug. 15.
Students from Virginia and Ohio will study music at Bluffton University with the help of scholarships they earned as winners of Bluffton’s 2015 Performing Scholar Competition.
Mary Bender of Harrisonburg, Va., and Cassandra Steiner of Celina, Ohio, have been awarded renewable scholarships valued at $80,000 and $72,000, respectively, over four years.
Bender plans to major in music education with a focus on vocal study, while Steiner intends to major in music with an eye toward pursuing both music and art therapy.
BFR is accepting registrations for an adult men’s basketball league. Registration deadline is Friday, Aug. 14. Play will begin Monday, Aug. 17, with games at 7 and 8 p.m. at BFR.
