Saturday mornings from March 25 to April 29

Bluffton Family Recreation is accepting registration for a volleyball camp for youth in fourth, fifth and sixth grades, according to Joseph Beagle, BFR director.

The camp is held at BFR from 9 to 11 a.m., Saturdays from March 25 to April 29. Registration may be made online at www.bfronline.com

Camp costs are $50 for non-members and $40 for BFR members. The deadline to register is Wednesday, March 22.

Engaging students in better understanding of community needs in Lima

Dr. J. Walter Paquin, associate professor of social work, will present the Colloquium "Classrooms, Community and Coffee” on March 17.
 
His presentation is free and open to the public beginning at 4 p.m. in Centennial Hall’s Stutzman Lecture Hall.
 
The presentation will focus on finding ways to engage students in better understanding community needs in Lima, Ohio. Paquin will highlight a new approach he took this fall to keep social work students in Allen County for their community practice.
 

Dr. Christina Sherry ’04, medical science liaison at Abbott Nutrition, Columbus, Ohio, will present, “The Art of Practicing Science: How a Liberal Arts Education Improves a STEM Career,” on Tuesday, March 21, at 11 a.m. in Centennial Hall’s Stutzman Lecture Hall. This event is free and open to the public.
 
She will explain how communication and creativity are vital for success in the science field. Sherry is a medical science professional and expert in adult therapeutic nutrition.

Recipient of Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana

A former Bluffton resident, Nils Riess, was recently recognized by the Republic of Estonia. (His wife, Susan, was an Bluffton elementary school teacher.)

The Ohio Northern University Professor of Communication Arts Emeritus was awarded the Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana from the Republic of Estonia.

All Bluffton MAEd classes are offered online or through Zoom video-conferencing technology

Bluffton University is now offering a faith-based concentration of study for educator’s seeking a master’s degree.The faith-based concentration is in addition to Bluffton’s intervention specialist licensure, reading endorsement and leadership concentrations. The concentration is an outgrowth of the Mennonite Education Agency’s Anabaptist Learning Institute program which features 10 credit hours of Christ-centered graduate-level coursework.
 

She also volunteered at the hospital

Patricia Ann McCafferty, 73, died March 5, 2017, at Bluffton Hospital. She was born May 17, 1943, in New Jersey to the late John and Anita (Matthews) Derry.  On Oct. 21, 1977, she married Bob McCafferty who survives.

Pat graduated from Chagrin Falls High School in Chagrin Falls, Ohio.  She retired from housekeeping at Bluffton Hospital and also volunteered at the hospital.  She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Bluffton.  Pat enjoyed gardening, reading and traveling to Maine.
