Riley Creek Arbor program extended through April

Riley Creek Arbor extends its toy and book drive to assist Bluffton Community Preschool to April 30, according to Gary Reese, of Faith Investment Services, Bluffton.

The drive benefits the Bluffton Community Preschool. Here’s how Icon viewers may participate:

Visit Faith Investment Services, 122 N. Main St., from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesdays through Fridays, and select any item from the window to purchase.

Jeff Gundy: We all have a hunger for beauty

How do you encapsulate an idea as abstract as beauty? According to Dr. Jeff Gundy, professor of English at Bluffton University, beauty “does not respond well to mere reason.”

The next PrimeTimers event is noon, Tuesday, April 4.

PrimeTimers is a non-denominational, community fellowship gathering for adults 55 and over hosted at St. John Mennonite Church in Pandora. This event will feature the Ohio Northern University Flute Chorus/Quintet.

The church is located at 15988 Road 4, Pandora.

The meal will include meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, scalloped corn, cole slaw, dinner rolls, cake and coffee.

The Village of Bluffton’s Tree Commission will meet at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 4, in the town hall, according to Nancy Kindle, village fiscal officer.

Approximately 50 horses to be sold

The University of Findlay holds its 13th annual spring horse sale Saturday, April 29, at the University of Findlay’s Western Farm in the Dale Wilkinson Arena, 14700 U.S. Route 68 south of Findlay.

The sale draws buyers from multiple states, and presents prospects and finished horses for potential buyers. Demonstrations begin at 10 a.m. with the sale following at noon.

 A second-straight near-record construction season is underway across Ohio. This year, the Ohio Department of Transportation will invest $2.3 billion into the state’s roads and bridges, just shy of the record-$2.4 billion investments made in 2014 and 2015.

This construction season will include 1,098 projects, 26 valued at more than $10 million. Workers will pave 6,945 miles of roadway – enough for a two-lane road from Seattle to Key West, and repair or replace 1,281 bridges.

Speaker is director of African and African American Studies, Earldom

Author and professor Dr. James Logan will present “The Art of Hip Hop, Religion and Culture in Civil Society” during Forum at 11 a.m. on April 11 in Yoder Recital Hall. 

This is the 2017 Keeney Peace Lecture at Bluffton University. The event is free and open to the public. 

Logan is a professor of religion and professor and director of African and African American Studies at Earlham (Richmond, Ind.) College. His teaching and research cover many areas including relationships between religion, ethics and politics in civil and public life.

The Boehr Award will go to the best of show

The Bluffton University art department will present the 50th Juried Student Exhibition from April 3-28 in the Grace Albrecht Gallery in Sauder Visual Arts Center. The exhibition, which is free and open to the public, will showcase work created this academic year by students in university art classes or supervised independent studies.

Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 1-5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
