Just for the month - or just for the fun of it

Dwain Leiber came out of retirement in December – just for the month – or maybe, just for the fun of it.

Tom Dotson, who purchased Leiber Garage, 130 Vance St., from Duane in 2017, needed experienced help this month and he knew where to turn.

During December, the garage offers an $18.95 oil change special, and, well, the phone went off the hook with appointment requests.

Ente Dwain.

So, Dwain returned and as of the morning of Dec. 26 he has already changed oil on 140 vehicles.

Here's the Bluffton High School girls' varsity basketball team from 1978-79 season. Front from left, Jodi Diller, Linda Bracy, Amy Bixel, Mary Herrmann.

Standing from left, Sue Badertscher, Juleen Matter, Venessa Beach, Beth Barth, Julie Pogue, Ken Bostdorff, coach. The team went 7-3 in the Northwest Conference, finishing in third place. Overall, the team was 12-5.

The Icon opened its Christmas vault. Out dropped Christmas thoughts from Bluffton second graders in Bev Stockman's class from 2009. We hope you enjoy the following:

On the 12th day of Bluffton Christmas, the Bluffton Icon printed photos of the holiday window winners on Main Street and in Bluffton front lawns.

We also offered some photos of new traditions starting this year. Including this tree ornament-greeting from Jamie Nygaard, which carries a special Bluffton touch.

Christmas in downtown Bluffton in the early 1950s. There's Santa with a Santa Halloween mask. Our guess is that Bob Crow and Paul Steiner on working the PA system.

We're pretty certain that Al McCluer is Santa, and we are going to make a stab on the ID of the kids on the platform. On the far left, it looks like Dan Lehman, then Francis Harkness, Judy Harness and Donna McClure. That's as far as we can go.

This scene must have been from a Bluffton Business Men's holiday promotion.

The New Providence, N.J., school board  presented its second Impact Teacher Award to Eli Leader, groundskeeper at Salt Brook School, on Dec. 13.

Leader, a Bluffton High School graduate, is son of Don and Ann Leader of Bluffton.

He was recognized for his role in addressing students concern over a missing tree and helping students to find a solution for their dilemma.

Tell the Icon viewers what you remember

With the razing of Lincoln Hall on the Bluffton University campus, the Icon invites viewers who lived there to offer some stories or recollections. Send to: [email protected]. Here are four:

I lived in Lincoln Hall my first year as a freshman 1971 and as a senior in 1975. Even when it was known as a rather dirty, loud, study free dorm. It was always so centrally located on campus and was the closest dormitory to the gymnasiums.
