Canvassers will knock on Bluffton voter doors this week asking for signatures to place a voter-initiative on the November ballot.

The effort intends to replenish the Ohio Local Government Fund. If enough signatures are gathered and voters agree, the initiative places a surcharge on all Ohio vehicle owners who have vanity license plates, specialty plates, historical vehicle plates and motorcycle plates.

Although not yet confirmed, surcharge discussions range anywhere from $25 to $75 per plate, depending on the make, model and year of the vehicle, retroactive to 2013.

Free program Tuesday at the library offers some tips

Laurie Laird of New Leaf Landcape Garden Center, 0395 State Route 235, Ada, presents a program on spring vegetable and flower garden planning at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 2, in the lower level of the Bluffton Public Library.

Bluffton Hall of Famer :“The Light Still Shines Bright Off the Field: Success in Leadership and Life”

Standing in front of a room of Bluffton University students, faculty, staff and former coaches, Bluffton Hall of Fame member Andrew Nowlin welcomed everyone as family, saying once you’re a beaver, you’re always a beaver.

Nowlin, a 1991 graduate, presented the Alumni Forum “The Light Still Shines Bright Off the Field: Success in Leadership and Life” to a packed Stuzman Lecture Hall.

Marathana Prothro, assistant professor of communication at Bluffton University, will present Bluffton’s annual Civic Engagement Day Forum titled, “Using Ancient Wisdom to Stop Destructive Communication in its Tracks: Reining in Gottman’s Horsemen.” The presentation will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 2, in Yoder Recital Hall.

Previously eliminated disease resurged in a matter of months

As of early this month, there have been 228 cases of measles in 12 states so far this year. That means that, in less than three months, this year has seen more measles cases than all of 2017.

Cases have been confirmed in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Texas and Washington. Washington declared a state of emergency as the number of measles cases continued to rise.

Group meets author via Skype on April 3

Bluffton Public Library has a monthly adult book discussion group; April’s focus is “The Stranger in the Woods: The Extraordinary Story of the Last True Hermit" by Michael Finkel. In addition to the discussion, the group will meet with the author, via Skype. 

The book discussion, open to the public, is at noon, Wednesday, April 3, in the library. The monthly discussion group is open to new members and registration is suggested. The group meets the first Wednesday of every month, and occasionally has the author visit via Skype.

The American Cancer Society estimates approximately 145,000 Americans will be diagnosed with colon or rectal cancer in 2019, and both men and women have an approximately 1 chance in 20 of being diagnosed with this cancer at some point in their lifetime.

Statistically and depending on the year, it is either the second or third leading cause of cancer death among Americans. This disease has unnecessarily impacted and shortened many lives.  

Daniel Raymond Zimmerly, 66, died March 29, 2019, at Shawnee Manor Nursing Home.  Dan was born April 1, 1952, in Lima to the late Clayton and Barbara (Montgomery) Zimmerly.  On May 16, 1983, he married Cheryl Skelly Zimmerly who survives.

Wedding and event venue northeast of Ada opened last fall

Crimson Lane, 4600 County Road 1, Ada, will hold a spring open house from 3 to 7 p.m., Sunday, March 31.

The wedding and event venue northeast of Ada was opened in the fall by owners Mike and Jodi Willeke.

The venue has proved popular with over 60 weddings already booked. Crimson Lane also hosts events such as weddings, anniversaries, reunions, birthday parties, graduation parties, showers and business conferences and meetings. It is be open year round.
