February 2020

By Paula Scott, BCE Executive Director

The latest BCE events have me asking myself, “am I a planner?” Both the Business Plan Competition and the latest Brown Bag Discussion on succession planning, make me realize that looking ahead comes easy at some phases in life and harder at others.

Succession Planning
When I talked to folks about the succession planning event, many said that they “should” attend. In retrospect, I imagine it feels--perhaps unconsciously--disloyal to consider that discussion. Kind of like going to see a divorce lawyer when you’re happily married!

Cyneatha Millsaps, executive director, Mennonite Women USA, will present the Forum, “Gun Violence: Its Effects on Family and Community,” at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11, in Yoder Recital Hall.

Millsaps will tell about her family’s experience with gun violence and describe the many risks associated with gun ownership – particularly in communities of color.

Tonight's community meal cancelled

Bluffton schools are closed today (Thursday, Feb. 6) due to the icy weather conditions. The announcement was made on Ohio Alerts earlier this morning.

• The Thursday, Feb. 6, community meal at the Bluffton Senior Citizens Center is cancelled, according to Tonya Meyer.

Blame it on the "wintery-mix" outside.

At 8:23 p.m. tonight Greg Denecker, Bluffton schools superintendent, announced a two-hour delay for Bluffton on Thursday, Feb. 6.

The Icon will post any additional delays or cancellations of programs. Send details to:

A mother's musing

Bambino Mio, GroVia, Fill Your Pants, bumgenius, AppleCheeks, and Rumparooz - these are all brands of cloth diapers.

Cloth diapers have had a total revamp. I'm not talking about the big terrycloth squares that you perform a type of origami on, and then use giant safety pins to secure around your baby.

Cloth diapers nowadays come in dozens of different types, materials, shapes and colors: all-in-one, prefolds, envelope-style, pocket diaper with inserts, and choice of snaps or velcro closures and so on.

On Thursday, February 13 at 6 p.m., the library will host a "Galentine's" Collage
Workshop with artist Amanda Brasfield of Spiritus Collage. Celebrate friendship with your gal pals or create a collage to gift! Registrants will design and create their own unique 5”x 7” collage with their choice of inspirational words/phrases.

There is a $4 cash only fee at the door that covers supplies used at this workshop. This program is open to ages 12 through adult.
Please call 419-358-5016 or stop by the library to register by Feb. 6.
