Scott Douglas Gerber, law professor at Ohio Northern University, will discuss his latest novel, “The Art of The Law,” at 7 p.m., Monday, Feb. 24, at the Ada Public Library.

While in law school, Gerber read some novels by Attorney John Grisham (legal mysteries).  He liked the genre and thought he’d give novel writing a try.

Introducing this year's J. Denny and Jenny Beavers

One of the most tightly guarded secrets at Bluffton University is the identities of J. Denny and Jenny Beaver.

Even the closest of friends, roommates and family members of the students who portray Bluffton’s mascots may have no idea who is actually in the suit.

However, another generation of Beavers have concluded their mascot mission and are prepared to tuck away their tails for the next group of eager Beavers. Here are the newly identified Beavers, revealed on Saturday.

Lots of free hands-on science activities on Friday

Want to make your own lava lamp?

The Bluffton PTO invites families to elementary science night from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 21, at the elementary school gym and cafeteria.

Lots of free hands-on science activities are part of the evening. In addition to lava lamps, there are stations to test how fast you can throw objects of different weights using a radar gun.

Other activities include building foil boats and test how much weight they can hold, make ice cream, explore ONU’s mobile health clinic and make a water filter and then filter dirty water.

Bluffton University’s newest music department member will perform a recital at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27,  in Yoder Recital Hall.

Dr. Da Eun Choi, staff accompanist and piano instructor, will perform solo piano pieces as part of Bluffton’s Thursdays at Yoder program. Choi earned her DMA from the University of Texas at Austin.

She will perform demanding and difficult keyboard works, including: Wanderer Fantasy in C major, D. 760 by Franz Schubert, Gaspard de la nuit by Maurice Ravel and Danse Macabre, Op. 40/S. 555 by Camille Saint-Saëns (Arr. Franz Liszt).

SB Nation published a column by local sports writer, Cort Reynolds, on Larry Bird's legacy of winning and big plays in the mid-season classic.

A salute to the Berenstain Bears books

By Liz Gordon-Hancock
I have been known to quote Mama Bear from the Berenstain Bears books.

Not only is she always calm, collected and right (sorry daddies), but she speaks some great pearls of wisdom. She also knows when NOT to speak or intervene, allowing her cubs (or Papa) to learn for themselves.

I quote Mama Bear when I’m instructing my children about tattletales: “Tattling is telling just to be mean” according to Mama Bear, and she goes on to explain that telling on someone because you’re worried about them is different from tattling.

Expected to be completed late this fall

Despite heavy rainfall early in the year, the reconstruction and expansion of Interstate 75 through Findlay and Hancock County still hit major milestones in 2019 to keep the project on track.

The $114 million project is in its fourth and final year and is expected to be completed late this fall.

“The way we phased the work last year, plus a mild winter so far this year, has enabled us to work through the winter on bridges and ramps and keep the project on schedule,” said Chris Hughes, Ohio Department of Transportation District 1 deputy director.
