The Bluffton High School wrestling team lost a dual match to visiting Bath 39-18 Tuesday night, January 11.

Four Pirate matmen recorded individual wins. Bluffton's Thayne Kleman (113 lbs.) and Kaden Basil (190) were victorious via second-period pins. Pirates Isaiah Mikesell (138) and Jett Blackburn (175) each won by decision. 

The Pirate grapplers are back in action January 21-22 at the 43rd annual Van Buren Invitational. 

Allen East, Arcadia, VB, Carey and Columbus Grove are among the teams scheduled to compete.

Michael Alan Criblez, 70, passed away January 10, 2022 at Blanchard Valley Hospital, Findlay.  Mike was born September 10, 1951 in Lima to the late Marion and Bernice (Hullibarger) Criblez. On September 23, 1972 he married Wanda Cramer Criblez.

The Bluffton High School girls basketball team rallied from an 11-point fourth period deficit to edge visiting non-league foe Elida 49-47 Tuesday night, January 11. (View at https://youtu.be/ZdSpvJAE6bM)

Bluffton trailed 43-32 heading to the final quarter, but the Pirate girls outscored the Lady Bulldogs 17-4 in the fourth quarter. Their defense limited Elida to just four foul shots and zero baskets in the last stanza.

The Board of Education of the Bluffton Exempted Village School District will meet for organizational and regular meetings at 7:30 p.m. on January 12.

Bluffton University has received a $2 million estate gift from the trust of Hazel Robinson that will allow for a new scholarship fund benefitting nursing majors. The Lehman-Huber-Zerhrbach Scholarship is named in memory of the late Robinson’s maternal grandmother, Jane Huber Lehman, and her parents, Henry Zehrbach and Emma Lehman Zehrbach.

The scholarships will be awarded to nursing majors with preference given to female nursing students from India at the benefactor’s request. The first scholarships will be awarded in the fall of 2023.

Mayor Richard Johnson called the first Village Council meeting of 2022 to order at 7 p.m. on January 10. All members were present, and they began this meeting by looking over and approving payment of the Village's bills.

The council agenda includes an item for comments from members of the public. None were present on this date beyond the Icon reporter.

Please have storage boxes out

The Bluffton Fire Department has announced that garland removal will take place in downtown Bluffton starting at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening, January 12.

Businesses should put out their storage boxes in advance to assist the crew.

The following committee and council of the whole meetings will be held at the Bluffton Town Hall, 154 N. Main St., unless noted otherwise.

Girl Scouts in Bluffton are ready for annual cookie sales, which fund local scouting activities throughout the year. On January 7, Bluffton scouts from 5 local troops (kindergarten to 8th grade) met at the Bluffton United Methodist Church for activities to prepare them for cookie sales.

Bluffton Icon founder Fred Steiner has a story about Forgotten Bluffton that reveals the Diller country school at 7370 Grismore Road had some exceptional graduates.

"The Diller country school in northwest Richland Township had two rooms, which was unusual for country schools. But, it was most famous for the fact that from six to 10 of its graduates entered the medical profession."
