The West Ohio Food Bank was named the winner of the Lima Allen County  Chamber of Commerce’s Non-Profit of the Year Award at the masquerade ball and ceremony held on May 3. 

The West Ohio Food Bank becomes only the third non-profit to win the award twice, (2016, 2022) joining Lima Allen Council on Community Affairs (1998, 2014) and the Allen County Council on Aging (2006, 2013). 

The three finalists for this year’s Non-Profit of the Year Award were Crossroads Crisis Center, Inc.,  Cornerstone of Hope Lima, and West Ohio Food Bank.

The Bluffton High School baseball team was seeded 12th at the 13-team Elida district Div. III sectional drawing Sunday, May 8.

The Pirates (3-15) will host 13th seed Parkway (2-15) in sectional first round play Wednesday, May 18 at 5 p.m.

The winner advances to the sectional finals Friday, May 20 at top seed Pemberville Eastwood.

The district finals will be held at Elida May 26/28.

Coldwater (13-5) was seeded second, while Columbus Grove (13-4) was voted third.

Tickets for the May 9 Sectional Softball game must be purchased online at https://www.ohsaa.org/tickets.

Tickets will be checked for each car, as spectators pull into Village Park.

May 7 commencement ceremonies awarded over 150 Bluffton University graduates with masters and bachelors degrees. This was the 122nd annual commencement at the univeristy. The event was held in the Sommer Center with the procession of dignitaries, graduates and facutly led by President Jane Wood.

The Mental Health & Recovery Services Board of Allen, Auglaize, and Hardin Counties, also known as We Care People, urges area residents and organizations to "be seen with green" in support of mental health.

A Be Seen with Green campaign will take place the week of May 9-15. You are invited to show off your green  throughout the entire month of May, which is Mental Health Awareness Month.

The Bluffton High School boys track and field team finished a strong second in the annual 16-team Ada Invitational meet Saturday at War Memorial Stadium.

Van Wert won the boys team crown over Bluffton, 134 points to 116.5. 

Spencerville captured the girls team title with Kenton second, while the Pirate girls finished a solid sixth.

Senior Gavin Bogart won both the 110 high hurdles and 300 hurdles races to help pace the Pirates.

Members of the Bluffton Senior Citizens Center recently enjoyed an outdoor bread baking demonstration at the Schumacher Homestead, 8350 Bixel Rd. It was a damp and chilly week, but the group brought blankets and chairs, and made themselves comfortable.

Ivan Friesen provided the bread baking expertise, while Swiss Community Historical Society curator Keith Sommers filled in the guests on the history of bread ovens in the area known as The Settlement.

With the Bluffton University commencement of 2022 celebrated on May 7 and the Bluffton High School ceremonies in our sights on May 28, you may be preoccupied with what the future will bring for these young people.
