July 2022

The Bluffton Council meeting of July 26 had a light agenda but the gallery was packed when the meeting commenced at 7:00 p.m. A robust public call to account for a pressing matter of local import? Not tonight. Rather, most were on hand as friends and family of Austin Probst, who was to be sworn in to the Bluffton Police Department as a part-time patrol officer.

We received the following letter in response to Bill Herr's July 23 article on Bluffton rodeos.

My father Lester Neuenschwander (Niswander – as in Niswander’s Newsstand) and I were responsible for procuring and setting off the fireworks for the July 4th rodeo. We drove a van to the manufacturer near Dayton and returned with aerial bombs of various sizes and material to make ground displays. I remember a large field with a dozen or more very small, widely separated buildings; a way to minimize both injury and  loss of product if something accidentally ignited what was inside.

7/25 UPDATE: The final U.S. men's 4x400 relay team of Elija Godwin, Bryce Deadmon, Michael Norman and Champion Allison won gold on July 24.

Bluffton's Trevor Bassitt was asked to join the U.S. men's 4x400m relay team in one of two preliminary heats on Saturday, July 23. Running a time of 2:58.96, the team advances to finals on Sunday.

NBC Sports noted, "Fresh off of his bronze medal performance in the men's 400m hurdles final, Trevor Bassitt's excellent anchor leg helped Team USA advance to the finals of the 4x400 relay at Worlds."

Hello Everyone,

Yesterday (7-21-2022) it was brought to the attention of this office that multiple concerning allegations were recently made on social media regarding a local Teens for Christ branch and a few of its members. A letter was also found online that made serious allegations against a resident(s) of Allen County, Ohio.

Through our research we have found that members of various groups and boards throughout the community affiliated with Teens for Christ locally were likely presented with similar allegations via a letter in recent weeks.

“A kid in the newsroom” is the subtitle of Carl Bernstein's new book, a memoir of his start in journalism. Chasing History (Thorndike Press, ISBN- 13: 978-4328-9865-6) is Bernstein's account of his own history during a most interesting time in our country's historically turbulent 1950s and early ‘60s.

The Bluffton Shuffleboard Club meets in Buckeye Park, where the Village of Bluffton provides six courts and the club helps maintain the excellent conditions.

A Thursday afternoon visit found plenty of action on the shaded, well-appointed courts off Spring Street just across from the Bluffton Sportsmen's Club.

The club currently has 32 members but is always ready to welcome rookie and experienced players. Conversation revealed that kids and grandkids enjoy playing with their families. Club members come from as far away as Indiana.

Imagine a mysterious Bluffton location partially under water.

Stand near the entrance to Steinmetz Field. Turn toward Harmon Field. Take about a dozen steps toward the creek.

There you will discover the remnants of a dam. That dam backed up the creek, but not anymore. Instead, it simply creates a mysterious Bluffton location.
