Is “accessory dwelling unit” (ADU) in your vocabulary? Also known as granny flats, ADUs are stand-alone dwellings located on the same lot as a single family home. The Bluffton council’s Ordinance Committee is drafting a proposed ordinance to make ADUs a recognized type of housing with local oversight.

Housing shortages are creating new interest in ADUs in Ohio and across the country. New ADU legislation has been reported in Cincinnati, considered to be the first Ohio city to legalize granny flats.

Bluffton University’s fall instrumental concert featuring the Concert Band will be held on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 2:30 p.m.

Under the direction of Dr. Roy Couch, associate professor of music, selections will include three dances – “Danza Magicala,” “Lithuanian Dance,” and “Prelude and Polka,” as well as settings of familiar hymn tunes such as “Precious Lord, Take my Hand” and The “Water is Wide.” In anticipation of Halloween, “Ghost Apparatus” will get the audience in the mood.

This event is free and open to the public; a free-will offering will be taken for music scholarships.

In 1959, Peter Seeger wrote To Everything There is a Season, which was released by the folk group the Limeliters. Seeger then released the song himself a few months later. Neither version had much success until Roger McGuinn (aka Jim McGuinn) of the Limeliters formed the Byrds.

The Byrds released their version on October 23, 1965 and it hit number one in December. The title changed to Turn! Turn! Turn! for the release. The song holds the record for the oldest written lyrics because the verses are from Ecclesiastes in the Bible.

The Byrds formed in 1964 in Los Angeles with five members. Some music critics consider the band one of the most influential of its time. Several of the original members left to form other groups or have solo careers. One of the more famous members of the original group was David Crosby, who we lost in 2023. The last time the original group played together was in 1991 when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
