Many are not aware that having chronic GERD (gastroesophageal reflux) puts you at risk for this cancer. Once someone has symptoms of difficulty swallowing, the cancer is already at an advanced stage.
At the time of diagnosis, there is only a 20% 5-year survival.
Over time, GERD can lead to Barrett’s esophagus, a precancerous condition where the tissue that lines the lower esophagus changes and if not detected or treated, can develop into esophageal cancer.

Joanne Antibus, 67, passed away April 22, 2022 at her residence. Joanne was born October 11, 1954 in Maple Heights, Ohio, to the late Edward and Ethel (Redlein) Vinopal. On August 12, 1978 she married Robert Antibus and he survives.
Joanne led a life filled by her love of family, travel and time with nature. She was always the learner and teacher.
The Apollo Career Center Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. at 3325 Shawnee Rd. Lima, with the agenda attached to this article.
Items on the agenda include hiring some 75 part-time instructors and approving some 25 scholarships.
