15 minutes with Simon Chan
When you think of your childhood growing up in Bluffton, what stories stand out in your mind? Friends, teachers, school, etc.
I remember being absolutely terrified of our neighbor Eric Gellert like Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) was of his neighbor in the movie Home Alone --until I got to know him at least. I don't really have any really good stories, but I do remember a few things from forever ago that would be cool if they were still around. Many things in Bluffton have changed since my childhood. I remember from a long time ago: the Imperial Market, Ingall's Restaurant, and the bakery where the Sports Warehouse currently is.
You spent a lot of time working at the swimming pool during high school and maybe even college, right? Do you miss those days?
Eight summers of my life were devoted there. Truthfully I do miss those times where there wasn't a mortgage, bills, and responsibility....oh to be young again...
When did you graduate from BHS?
2003
Did you enroll in college right after high school? When did you graduate? Major?
I actually went to Ohio Northern University right after high school. After my freshman year in college, I transferred to The University of Findlay. I graduated in May of 2007 with a Bachelor's Degree in Technology Management.
How did you get so involved in technology? What was your first computer?
More than likely because it had buttons. Gene Lloyd also helped get me involved when I was in Junior High School, and it kind of expanded from there.......My first computer was a Packard Bell 42CD.
When did you start working at Best Buy? How did you learn to install the big screen tvs? Are you still doing that? What is the biggest television screen you've installed?
I started working at Best Buy in August of 2005 for the Geek Squad PC Support Department. I became a Home Theater Installer for Best Buy in May of 2007. The training was provided from other installers from the company and mostly just hands-on training. I have set up a few projectors with screens from 84" - 120" but if we're talking a physical TV, then I guess it would be the 65" that is on the wall in my living room. I have done it a few times here and there, but now I am an Autotech (Car Audio/Security Installer) and have been working on that.
What kind of technology do you have in your home now? Do you get tired of looking at computers if your jobs involve them?
There is a multitude of computers, laptops, networking equipment, TVs, an Xbox, and speakers throughout the house...
Tell me about your job at Cooper Tire. When did you start working there?
Currently I am a Network Administrator. Prior to that I worked in the Help Desk in the PC Support Group.
I think you got married about a year ago. How did you meet your wife, Heather? Where was the wedding?
Our one year anniversary is actually in July! We met in college through mutual friends. Our wedding took place overlooking the ocean in the Bahamas. We had a group of 22 people come along for the festivities.
Do you own a home in Findlay now? How often do you get to Bluffton?
We currently do own a home in Findlay! We try to get to Bluffton at least once every 1 - 2 weeks. My parents come visit us in Findlay here and there as well.
Where is your sister, Tracy?
Recently married, living in Michigan....enjoying time with her husband.....
I remember when your parents moved to Bluffton from Cambodia. Do they have relatives in the United States? Do you get to visit them? Have you ever considered traveling to their birthplace?
We have some family in Michigan, Texas, and California. We tend to visit family in Michigan more, since it isn't too long of a drive. I think it would be cool to visit the birthplace of my parents.
What goals do you have for yourself? With your wife? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
A goal I would like to have for myself in the future would be to be successful in my job, and be able to provide for my family in any way needed. Goal with my wife would be to raise a family...In 10 years, I would love to be able to say I've traveled the world, started a family, and possibly pursued my hobby of photography on a more professional level...
