Everything from myths of the world to 7 deadly sins on fall ILR course list
Bluffton University's Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR), an educational program for retirees, is offering 10 courses between Sept. 19 and Nov. 10.
The fall term costs $80, which allows participants to take as many courses as they wish and to join in other ILR activities. Individuals may take one or two courses for $30 each. Registration and course fees, if applicable, are due at the time of registration.
Unless noted otherwise below, classes will meet in the ILR classroom, located in Shultz Hall of Riley Court on campus.

Fall classes include:
oThe Seven Deadly Sins
Rev. Kevin Mohr, English Lutheran Church, Bluffton
Mondays, Sept. 19-Oct. 10, 9-10:30 a.m.
Mohr will explore the historical development of the concept of the "seven deadly sins" and its biblical roots; its use in the media, literature, art and film; and its relevance for the 21st century.
oSuccessful Aging: It's More Than 'Keep Breathing'
Lynn Miller, retired consultant
Mondays, Oct. 17-Nov. 7, 9-10:30 a.m.
The course will address: the broad range of recent research to see how understandings of aging have changed over time and how those findings are shaping what has become known as "eldercare"; factors that create physical and mental impairment, and what can be done to lessen them; elements that make "growth" in aging possible; and Carl Jung's 7 Tasks of Aging, along with plans to put what's been learned into practice.
oThe Great Decisions Discussion Program

This fall's topics are Rebuilding Haiti, U.S. National Security, Horn of Africa, Responding to the Financial Crisis, Germany Ascendant, Sanctions and Nonproliferation, The Caucasus and Global Governance.

Participants will hear mythological stories from around the globe and discover that they still communicate wisdom sometimes difficult to convey in other ways.
oGermany (Growing up Schwab)
Emil Ziegler, ILR member
Wednesdays, Sept. 21-Oct. 12, 9-10:30 a.m.
Zeigler will discuss life and customs in the rural village of Mehrstetten in southern Germany. Included will be a closer look at the unique characteristics of the ethnic population there.
oCooking with Tracy
Tracy Steele, retired home economics teacher and ILR member
Wednesdays, Oct. 19-Nov. 9, 9-10:30 a.m.
Location to be announced
This "adventure in creative cooking" will consist of crock-pot cooking, cooking for two, microwave cooking and eating good foods for fewer calories, with recipe exchanges and time for tasting. Cost for materials is $5.
oNorthern Art from the 15th through the 17th Centuries

Wednesdays, Sept. 21-Nov. 9, 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
Participants will focus on the masters of Germany, the Netherlands and Flanders/Belgium, with contrasts drawn to what has happening in the Italian art world at the time.

Among the topics will be women's health education in Haiti, how a Native American village was created for Bluffton's sesquicentennial celebration, the Lima Symphony, the history of paper-cutting, growing up in Kenya as a missionary child and returning there to serve as an adult, and what it takes to be a chambermaid at the resort in Cape May, N.J.
oShakespeare at the Movies

Thursdays, Sept. 22-Nov. 10, 9 a.m. to noon
After exploring the life and times of Shakespeare, the class will view screen adaptations of several of his plays, including "Romeo and Juliet," "Hamlet" and "Much Ado About Nothing."
oDrawing
Sharon King and Judy Ruen, retired art teachers and ILR members
Thursdays, Sept. 22-Nov. 10, 1:30-3 p.m.
The Lion and Lamb Peace Arts Center classroom
Students will learn a method for drawing such things as buildings, streets and sidewalks, choosing from pencil, colored pencil and charcoal as their drawing tool. Materials cost is $5.
