Volleyball: Transylvania hands Bluffton its first HCAC loss of the season

The Transylvania University women's soccer team turned a 17-5 advantage in shots into a 4-0 shutout of Bluffton University on a cold Saturday, October 1, 2011. Bluffton dipped to 4-2-1 overall and 1-1 in the Heartland Conference, while the Pioneers improved to 9-1 overall and 2-0 in the HCAC.
A Michelle Schroeck tally less than five minutes into the contest gave Transy a quick 1-0 lead over the visitors. Elizabeth Schmitt and Amy Ghibauby both found the net before the 25-minute mark as the Pioneers built a 3-0 lead at the break.
Schmitt headed home an Abby Felthaus corner kick with 26 minutes to play, capping the scoring in the Pioneers 4-0 shutout over the visitors.
The home team put 10 shots on frame, compared to four by the Beavers. Transy forced five more corner kicks (8-3), while Bluffton was whistled for one more foul (6-5). Kourtney Lewis (Arlington/Riverdale) paced the Beavers with three shots, two on frame. Sophomore keeper Maggie Armstrong (Vevay, Ind./Switzerland Cty) collected six saves in the loss.
The Beavers jump back into conference action when they travel to Earlham College on Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011. The contest is slated to start at 4 p.m. in Richmond, Indiana.
