Free health events continue this week at BFR
The fifth week of BFR’s Keeping Active Wellness Campaign will include several different programs in addition to the free walking days, free fitness classes and recreation options.
Community Markets will open their doors for a Healthy Grocery Tour on Monday, Feb. 16 (6-7 PM) and Friday, Feb. 20 (12-1 PM). Graduate students from Bluffton University’s dietetics program will lead the tour to help people make healthier choices. This new program will help educate the community about new vegetable and grain choices, as well as how to read food labels for appropriate serving sizes.
Registration is requested for the grocery tours; call BFR 419-358-4150 for more information about this free event.
Friday, Feb. 13, is the Healthy Heart Celebration day at BFR. The indoor track will be available for free use and families with young children areinvited to join in on fun activities between 10:30 and noon that day.
The community is invited to wear red to show support of healthy hearts. BFR will be counting laps on that day to show support for heart education. The indoor track will be free and open to visitors on Saturday Feb. 14, (8 AM-9 PM), Monday, Feb. 15, (3-6 PM), Wednesday, Feb. 18, (5:30 AM-9 PM), Friday, Feb. 20 (5:30 AM-9 PM plus the Coffee Walk from 8:30-10 AM) and Sunday, Feb. 22 (3-6 PM).
Individuals are encouraged to try out a new fitness class during this week.
Tuesday night’s Cardio & Strength class will be offered without fee on Feb. 17 (6-7 PM). Kelly Martz leads the group class in a circuit format combining cardio with lots of weight training.
The Low Impact Aerobics class, held on Monday, Feb. 16, from 10-11 AM, will be offered free.
Water Exercise classes will be free on Wednesday, Feb. 18, (9:30-10:15 Level 1) and on Thursday, Feb. 19, (8:30-9:15AM Level 2 and 9:30-10:15 AM Level 1). No registration is required and new participants are welcome.
These classes will be free for continuing participants as well. For directions to the Maple Crest Senior Living pool, contact BFR at 419-358-4150. All of BFR’s fitness classes are open to new participants through out the year. If these dates do not work in your schedule, attend another session later without charge.
In addition to formal programs, the Keeping Active schedule includes a few more drop-in recreational options.
A 3v3 basketball tournament for adults is planned for Tuesday, Feb. 17, from 7-9 PM. Teams are asked to register by 6 PM on that night; cost is $5 per team. The BFR gymnasium will be available for drop-in family play from 7-9 PM on Saturday, Feb. 21. This is an unscheduled time so youth and adults are free to shoot baskets and use other sport equipment in the gymnasium. BFR members, Family Rec Pass holders and the public are welcome; no registration is required.
The MyPlate Bingo Challenge continues through Feb. 27. Individuals and families are invited to pick up a card from BFR and try to accomplish as many of the Bingo items as possible. Prizes will be awarded to those who completely cover the card, or get multiple bingos.
Keeping Active is a six-week health promotion offered as a community service by BFR Sports & Fitness. The calendar of events promotes exercise and healthy eating.
