Volleyball drops two at HCAC/OAC Crossover

BEREA, Ohio - Bluffton University volleyball dropped its matches to both Capital and Ohio Northern on day two of the OAC/HCAC Crossover Tournament. The Beavers (8-8) dominated the first two sets with Capital (25-17, 25-13) before the wheels fell off as Capital swept the final three (25-20, 25-23, 15-11), capitalizing on Bluffton’s hitting errors.
Reigning HCAC Player of the Week Bethany Martini (Pickerington/North) led the team, posting 17 kills against the Crusaders. Remi Bower (Deshler/Patrick Henry) chipped in 11 kills and four digs. Junior Erin Weisgarber (Bolivar/Tuscarawas Valley) posted a double double with 38 assists and 13 digs. Sydney Mohler (Lima/Central Catholic) and Abby Rohrbach (New Knoxville) pitched in with 15 and 13 digs, respectively. The Beavers aced Capital 19 times over the five sets, compared to just six for the Crusaders. Becca Tourney (Columbia City, Ind.) rifled a career-high nine and Jessica Lovell (Grove City) added four.
Bluffton lost its final match of the weekend to No. 22 Ohio Northern in four sets (25-16, 25-15, 18-25, 25-15). Martini and Carley Lester (Chesapeake) each logged double-digit kill efforts, as Martini pounded a team-high 14 spikes and Lester recorded 10 against just one error for a .290 hitting percentage. Freshmen Remi Bower and Sarah Heydinger (Tiro/Buckeye Central) posted nine and five kills, respectively.
Three Beavers chalked up double-digit digs in the four-set match. Mohler, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, had a match-high 24 digs, Rohrbach chipped in with 14 and Weisgarber fashioned another double double with 11 digs and 37 assists.
Bluffton returns to the Sommer Center for a rare Thursday night showdown with Denison on Sept. 28 at 7 p.m.
