Beavers down Edgewood for school-record 8-2 start

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Bluffton University baseball team scored a run in the first and never looked back as the Beavers took down Edgewood College 11-6 on Saturday, March 10. Bluffton improved to 8-2 on the season, notching the best 10-game start in school history! Edgewood fell to 0-1 following its 2018 season opener.
Senior Ryan Golden (Findlay) singled home freshman Reid Ruhl (Hamilton) in the top of the first for a quick 1-0 lead over the Eagles. Back-to-back doubles by Colin Gregory (Fremont/Clyde) and Golden ignited a three-run inning for Bluffton in the third.
Golden's second double in as many innings made it 5-0 in the fourth. A wild pitch sent Golden home and Jacob Latkofsky (Temperance, Mich./Ida) crossed the dish when Lenny Winiarski (Cincinnati/LaSalle) reached courtesy of an Edgewood error. When the dust settled it was 7-0 in the middle of the fourth.
A Reid Maus (Hamilton/Badin) sacrifice fly in the fifth made it 8-1. Two Eagle scores in the bottom of the frame and another in the sixth gave Edgewood hope as the score went to 8-4 heading to the seventh. Colin Gregory tripled and Golden followed with his third two-bagger of the game as the Beavers opened it back up at 10-4.
Ruhl singled home Jaxon Rogan (Marysville) in the eighth on the way to an 11-6 victory in Bluffton's final game from Fort Myers.
Golden tied a school record with five hits on the day, going a perfect 5-of-5 with three doubles. He drove in four and scored two times. Ruhl laced four hits and scored three runs, while Gregory also crossed the dish three times with two hits. Latkofsky had a day with four safeties and he scored twice.
Freshman Garrett O'Reilly (Galena/Orange) notched his first collegiate victory, allowing three runs, two earned. on four hits in five innings of work. Cam Clark (Cairo/Bath) and Tommy Siemer (Liberty Township/Lakota East) set up for Dante D'Andrea (Westerville/North) who worked a perfect ninth with a pair of strikeouts.
Bluffton will be back in the Midwest for its home opener with Ohio Northern on Tuesday, March 13. First pitch at Memorial Field is slated for 4:15 p.m. Find your Carhartts and come out when the Beavers look to improve on their school-record start to the season!
