Pedestrian and bicycle safety training

The Creating Healthy Communities (CHC) Program of Allen County Public Health hosts an “Enforcement for Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Training” from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday and Friday, April 26 and 27  at Lima Public Library.

CHC is partnering with We Bike, Inc., experts on bicycle and pedestrian topics/issues, to assist with the implementation of a Pedestrian and Bicycle Law Enforcement Training Program to help improve pedestrian and bicycle safety across Allen county.

The training program is a partnership between bicycle advocacy and local law enforcement, providing police departments with state and national pedestrian and bicycle safety/education materials at no cost to the department.

The Ohio Department of Transportation is covering the costs for the course through an Active Transportation Funding project.

This project will provide training to law enforcement officers on the rights and responsibilities of all road users. The purpose of the training is to increase officer knowledge of traffic laws, help improve pedestrian and bicycle safety, reduce serious injuries and fatalities and to foster relationships among cycling advocates and local law enforcement.

What you'll learn
In the seminar, officers learn the what, where, when, how, and why of walking and bicycling.  Additionally, components of the Highway Safety Triangle (engineering, education, enforcement) and environment audits, how pedestrian and bicycle crashes happen, pedestrian and bicycle laws, crash investigating and reporting, and potential law enforcement partners will be covered.

The training is appropriate for all law enforcement officers.  Limited seats are still available.  If you are a law enforcement officer and interested in this training, please call Shelly Miller at Allen County Public Health at 419-228-4457.
