Complete cultural competencies training certification

Five Bluffton University faculty and staff members recently completed the Building Cultural Competencies within Organizations certification program through Tiffin University.

The program is designed to help individuals work more effectively with people who are different from themselves and strengthen their awareness and understanding about diversity and inclusion through the lens of cultural intelligence.

Bluffton’s certified faculty/staff members include:
• Tyson Goings, director of diversity, equity and inclusion and director of residence life
• Tracey Jordan, human resources and payroll coordinator
• Dr. Crystal Sellers Battle, professor music and department chair
• Quincy Salcido, admissions counselor
• Chad Shutler, head women’s basketball coach and assistant professor of health and physical education

“Being sensitive in culturally diverse situations allows people to be better leaders,” said Goings. “This training helped us think broadly about the campus community and discover new ways to present programming at Bluffton.”

Goings, Sellers Battle and Salcido are all members of the 2020-21 Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee. Jordan represented human resources during the training while Shutler represented athletics.

Goings was appointed as director of DEI in fall 2020 and the committee formed shortly after as part of the university’s five-year strategic plan.

DEI committee initiatives for the year included anti-racism training for faculty and students. He also recently completed CQ (cultural intelligence) training from the Cultural Intelligence Center.

As a Level 1 CQ Facilitator, Goings has access to assessments, resources and training tools to continue improving diversity, equity and inclusion at Bluffton.
