Design and sponsorships underway for disc golf course
Two local residents are working with the Bluffton parks and recreation committee to design a disc golf course at the Village Park. Evan Steiner and Grant Mumaugh, friends and disc golf enthusiasts, approached the Village of Bluffton about putting in the course and have since received approval from town council.
Installation of the front nine holes is tentatively scheduled for Fall 2021, with the back nine slated for Spring/Summer 2022.
Steiner and Grant presented progress on course design and sponsorship opportunities to members of the Bluffton Area Chamber of Commerce on September 10.
For those unfamiliar with the sport, the premise is similar to traditional golf. Frisbees/discs are thrown from a tee-pad with the objective of getting them into the basket in the fewest strokes possible. Each hole varies in distance and design to challenge players’ abilities. With lockdown orders forcing people to rediscover outdoor activities, disc golf has exploded in popularity over the last year. The sport also garners high marks for its accessibility: it is free to use the course, the equipment is inexpensive, and all age groups can play.
Funds for the project will be raised through donations and hole sponsorships, with all proceeds gifted to the village. There is also a chance of receiving state funding through a NatureWorks Grant, pending approval. In total, the expected cost to install the baskets, concrete tee-pads, and signage is $18,000.
Donors above $250 will be listed on the course overview board, and hole sponsors will have their names or logos on signage at their respective tees. Hole sponsorships are available for $500 for 5 years; contact the organizers to check availability.
Persons interested in donating or being involved with the planning are invited to contact Evan Steiner, [email protected] or visit the Bluffton Disc Golf Association Facebook page. A GoFundMe account is being set up. Currently checks can be made out to “The Village of Bluffton” with “disc golf course” in the memo line.
