From time to time a photo completely stumps the experts. We've passed this snapshot on to our panel of distinguised "We knew every one in Bluffton circa 1900-1961." No one on our panel - including Charles Hilty, Rudi Steiner, Richard Jordan - can identify this man. Paul Diller took the photo in the late 1940s-early 1950s on Main Street.

Icon viewers are welcome to offer suggestions on this mystery guy.

The Icon spotted this 1951 Ohio plate at the Wheels Fest' in June.

Here are some events that took place that year: The Yankees defeated the Giants in the World Series, the cost of a first-class stamp was 3 cents, the 22nd amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified. It limited the number of terms a president may serve.

Yul Brynner made his first appearance as the king in "The King and I." J.D. Salinger wrote "The Catcher in the Rye."

Lois Benroth

Lois Janet (Berry) Benroth, 95, died on Friday, July 15, 2011 at her residence at Emeritus of Mentor in Mentor, Ohio. She was born in May 1916 to James Leroy and Effie (Miller) Berry in Bluffton, where she lived until 2008.

A 1934 graduate of Bluffton High School, Mrs. Benroth was an inspector at Triplett Corporation for 30 years. As a member of the Bluffton Presbyterian Church, she taught Sunday School to many children. Her affiliations included the American Legion Auxiliary and Bluffton Senior Citizens.
