Bluffton Sardines enjoy WOAL meet ever - finish 4th of 8 teams

Bluffton Sardine swim team finished fourth of eight teams in this past weekend’s Western Ohio Aquatic League meet held at Bluffton. In the girls’ standings, Bluffton finished sixth overall. In the boys’ standings Bluffton finished fourth overall.

It was Bluffton’s best-ever finish in a WOAL meet, which is dominated by teams from communities larger than Bluffton.

Three Bluffton seniors swam in their final meet. They are Cobie Mikesell, Misha Groman and Sierra Osborne.

5K benefits The Quarry Farm

The Quarry Farm Nature Preserve & Conservation Farm, 14321 Road 7L, Pandora, will host the first run/walk on Saturday, Oct. 1. The Quarry Farm 5K inaugural race will consist of two events: The Virtual 5K and an Onsite 5K. The Virtual 5k is to be done at your own location and pace. 

The Onsite Quarry Farm 5K is considered an easy (just two sloping hills) out-and-back rural course that takes participants past a historic bridge, two scenic creeks to a rest halfway and back to the finish line at Red Fox Cabin.

Pirate cross country athletes meet Tuesday for initial practice

Bluffton High School cross country practice will begin soon.

Runners from seventh through 12th grade are invited to participate. Meet at 8:30 a.m. at the village park, beginning on Tuesday, June 28.

Practices are planned:
• June 28-July 1
• July 4-8
• July 25-28

Hannah Chappell-Dick, BHS grad and recent Eastern Mennonite University grad, will assist the team this summer.

Trevor Bassitt Division III state champion 110-meter hurdles

Bluffton High School track fans have lots to look forward to next season.

Competing in the Division III Ohio High School Athletic Association state track meet in Columbus earlier this month, the boys' team scored 15 points placing 12th overall.

• Trevor Bassitt, junior, won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.53 seconds.

• The 4 by 800-meter relay made up of one senior, two juniors and one sophomore finished fourth in a time of 8:08.15.

Four Pirates receive all-NWC softball honors

Four members of the Bluffton High School softball team received all-NWC honors this spring.

They include Sami Fruchey, senior, first team; Taylor Monday, senior; second team; Averey Rumer, freshman, honorable mention; and Katie Prater, freshman, honorable mention.

In voting by Northwest Conference softball coaches for the 2016 softball season senior Jada Preston, a pitcher from Crestview was named Player of the Year.   Columbus Grove senior Brooke Hoffman finished second in the balloting with Spencerville sophomore Kara May finishing third.
