American Cancer Society celebrates strength of survivors; cancer survivors invited to survivors dinner

The American Cancer Society is extending an invitation to cancer survivors and their guest to a celebration reception. New this year, cancer survivors will be honored prior to the Relay For Life walking event in June.

On Thursday, May 26, the American Cancer Society hosts the ninth annual Relay For Life of Bluffton Cancer Survivors Reception. This is event is free for cancer survivors and a guest.

The reception will take place at the Bluffton Senior Center at 321 N. Main St., Bluffton from 5:30 - 7 p.m.

Sponsors chip in for Friends of the Library golf scramble

The Friends of the Bluffton Public Library are hosting the Birdies for Bookworms Golf Scramble on Saturday, June 4, 2011. The event supports literacy and lifelong learning in Bluffton and will help the Bluffton Public Library weather a more than 30 percent reduction in state funding.

The Friends are seeking door prize donations and sponsorships from businesses and individuals, including tributes to loved ones.

Sponsor levels include: $1,000 - William Shakespeare; $500 - Charles Dickens; $250 - John Grisham; $100 - Dr. Seuss; $50 - Hole Sponsor.

Still time to join Birdies for Bookworms Golf Scramble June 4

Love to golf? Love your library?

Put the two together and you get the Birdies for Bookworms Golf Scramble on Saturday, June 4. The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Bluffton Public Library and offers many fun ways to support the local library.

Golfers can join Mayor Fred Rodabaugh for a scramble event at the Bluffton Golf Club including cart, continental breakfast and lunch for $50.

Change in Monday night council committee meetings

Bluffton council's Fire and Rescue meeting scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Monday, May 9, has been canceled. In its place, a 7:30 p.m. utility committee meeting has been scheduled, according to Nancy Kindle, village fiscal officer.

Transy knocks Bluffton out of HCAC Tournament (softball)

The Bluffton University softball team had its chances, stranding 10 runners, but the Beavers came up just short as Anderson opened the 2011 Heartland Conference Tournament with a 2-1 victory. Bluffton fell to 19-15 on the season, while the Ravens improved to 25-12 with the victory. A seven-run second inning powered host Transylvania to a 10-2 mercy-rule victory over the Beavers, ending Bluffton's season on the first day of the HCAC tournament.

Janet K. Shulaw-Hampp 1943-2011

Janet Shulaw-Hampp

Janet K. Shulaw-Hampp, 67 died at 5:29 p.m. after a battle with pancreatic cancer at her daughter's residence in Lima.

She was bon on Sept. 4, 1943 in Kenton, Ohio to Ralph and Naomi (Grabow) Wise who preceded her in death. On Sept. 3, 1962, she married Paul L. Shulaw Jr. who died Dec. 16, 2001.

On Oct. 16, 2006 she married Darrell E. Hampp of Wapakoneta who survives.

She graduated from Cory-Rawson High School and later from from Lima School of Practical Nursing.
