David Torsell was a World War II veteran
David Mark Torsell Sr., 91, died at 11:55 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2015, at The Hilty Home in Pandora, Ohio.
David was born on Thursday, July 03, 1924, in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, to the late Joseph Francis and Verna (Palmer) Torsell.
During WWII, he served as a combat medic with the 30th Medical Battalion in the European Theater of Occupation, including the battle of the Rhineland and in Central Europe. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star. He was a life member of VFW Post #8794. David had been a member of The Civil Defense Corps of Champaign and Franklin Counties. He had been very active with the Boy Scouts of America of Champaign County, serving as a Scout Master.
He was a member of New Creation Lutheran Church, in Lima. He received his Bachelor of Science in Mortuary Science degree from The Pittsburg Institution of Mortuary Science. Throughout his professional career David had worked as a licensed funeral director, appraiser with the State of Ohio, Department of Transportation and The Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development. He also was co-owner of The Urbana Development Corporation and had been a salesman for The Carnation Milk Company. He was active in the Masonic fraternity, belonging to Harmony Lodge #8 in Urbana, Ohio. He also belonged to and was active in Chapter, Council and Commandry.
He is survived by: a daughter, Patricia (Fred) Rodabaugh of Bluffton; one son, David (Pat) Torsell, Jr., Urbana; six grandchildren, Aaron (Amy) Sherman, Richard Moses (Heather) Sherman, David (Krista) Torsell, Joseph (Andrea) Torsell, Katherine (Rob) Glenn and Amy (Jesse) Blackburn; fourteen great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; one sister, Margaret Zernicki and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his former wife, Shirley (Young) Torsell; two brothers and three sisters.
A funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 9, 2015 at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home in Lima, Ohio. Rev. Todd Cosart will officiate. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetary, Bluffton.
Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Children's Hospital.
