Sarah Schriner of Bluffton finished third in the Second District American Legion Oratorical Scholarship competition. The event was held Feb. 25 at Wright State Univeristy-Lake Campus.
She was sponsored by the Bluffton American Legion Post 382. She received awards from Sam Reineke at the March 5 Bluffton American Legion post meeting.
Three Bluffton High School graduates finished in the top 9 or higher in the NCAA Division II national Track and field meet in Mankato, Minn., March 9-10.

Bluffton University's Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR), an educational program for retirees, is offering nine courses on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays this spring from March 26-May 7.
Cost to take three or more courses is $80. Individuals may take one or two courses for $30 each. Registration and, if applicable, course fees are due at the time of registration. Most classes will meet in the ILR classroom, located in Shultz Hall of Riley Court on campus.
In the Lima News lately Fred Steiner mentioned the "phony storefronts, trying to be a village" in towns other than Bluffton. I want to second the challenge to phoniness, by asking our friends right here for real honesty.
I went to our Community Market, whose manager and employees are both helpful and kind, to buy their advertised crab cakes, and hoped for information on a label about ingredients. Would crab be a minor part?
In an effort to help relieve some of the hardship and financial difficulty of the depressed economy in the Pandora-Gilboa area, the churches of Pandora and the Gilboa United Methodist Church are offering food boxes on the last Saturday of each month for households in the Pandora-Gilboa school district who find themselves in need.
The boxes are designed to provide nine meals (three breakfasts, three lunches and three dinners) for a family of four.
Madlyn V. Marquart Kimmel, 89, of Bluffton died at 7:04 a.m. March 10, 2012, at Richland Manor, Bluffton.
She was born in Lima Jan. 21, 1923, the daughter of Faye and Ilo Isham. On Nov. 1, 1942 she married Francis Marquart and he preceded her in death on June 15, 1988. On June 15, 1991 she married Joel Kimmel and he survives in Bluffton.
