Because retirement rules of thumb are guidelines designed for the average situation, they'll tend to be "wrong" for a particular retiree as often as they're "right."

However, rules of thumb are usually based on a sound financial principle, and can provide a good starting point for assessing your retirement needs. Here are four common retirement rules of thumb.

Anne (McGinnis) Parker, Bluffton native, was recently named the 2012 Ottawa County Senior Hall of Fame recipient.

The award was given at an Ottawa County senior gathering at Camp Perry on May 9.

The following was read during the event:

This 2012 Senior Hall of Fame recipient, hailing from our own island, Put-in-Bay, has been a lifetime resident of the island. She has been very active with all the activities and programs of the PIB Senior Center. She is always willing to "jump" in and to help where and whenever an extra hand is needed.

Blanchard Valley Hospital announced that the HeartCare Center, Findlay, will be renamed the Jane & Gary Heminger HeartCare Center. The renaming comes in tribute of the Heminger's recent donation to support cardiovascular services at BVH and in recognition of their many contributions to Blanchard Valley Hospital throughout the years.

It could be the best thing since sliced bread. Some call it a "better mouse trap." Whatever you call it, The Bluffton Icon's garage sale map is finding friends among garage salers in the community.

The Icon this week launched a garage sale map. The map lists every garage sale posted on The Icon.

"Several garage salers have asked if we could create a map," said Fred Steiner of The Icon. "We've experimented with at least four different versions and are happy to officially launch it.'"

Bluffton chamber members heard an update on Bluffton's comprehensive bike and pedestrian pathway at the June 8 chamber breakfast. Dick Ramseyer, chair of the pathway board, told the 60-plus chamber members attending that several steps have taken place since the board formed.

The board is pursuing two paths at the present time. One connects the Riverbend- Maple Crest community to Bentley Road. The other connects the Triplett Bike Path near the National Quarry to the State Route 103 business sector via the abandoned AC&Y Railroad right of way.

It was a special night at Hilty Memorial Home on May 31. Residents, family and friends enjoyed a picnic with the Al Best band performing.

Prior to the picnic the Columbus Grove Legion, together with the Grove VFW, honored Charles Turner with a 21-gun salute and presented his widow, Doris, of 20 years with the flag.

Just before he died, Turner had asked his son-in-law to be certain that he received his Military Rites. At the time of his death, arrangements for those rights were not able to be coordinated.

Larry Edmiston arrangedand took part in the ceremony.
