These Bluffton High School students have been named Northwest Conference scholar-athletes for the winter sports season. Scholar athletes are letter winners in a sport who have earned the following GPA during the season of their sport:
Gold level -- GPA of 3.50 to 4.00
Silver level -- GPA of 3.00 to 3/49
Bluffton council didn't take much time selecting a replacement for Everett Collier, who resigned his council post on April 20.
In a special meeting on April 28 council voted to name Richard Johnson as Collier's replacement. Johnson will be sworn in at the May 4 council meeting.
Dave Steiner, council president, told The Icon that the vote in favor of Johnson was 5-0 and that there were no other candidates under consideration. Steiner also said that Johnson has taken out petitions to seek the office in the general election in the fall.

Lemon Blackberry Shortcakes get top billing on the cover of the magazine and there is a photo of the summer dessert inside. Chef Rhonda Moor says that her grandparents’ backyard berry patch inspired the fresh fruit she uses to create the “sweet compote that spills out from between two layers of a rustic shortcake.”
Stratton Greenhouses, 9915 Lincoln Highway, Bluffton, celebrate its 66th anniversary this weekend with an open house from Friday, May 1, to Sunday, May 3.
The event includes food, drawings and several special offers.

Seven area churches are again partnering in the community-wide vacation Bible school program. This year’s event will be hosted by Bluffton Presbyterian Church July 19-23 from 6-8 p.m. Children age 4 through fifth grade are welcome to attend, at no cost. Children need not be attenders of any of the seven churches.
State Representative Bob Cupp will hold a legislative update meeting at 11:30 a.m. Monday, May 4, at the Bluffton Public Library. Cupp represents the 4th Ohio House district, which is comprised of all of Allen County. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.
Cupp will provide a brief update on legislative activity in the Ohio General Assembly during the first four months of this year. He will then be available to listen to public concerns and ideas regarding pending legislation or other topics that may be of interest to attendees.
All are invited to attend a National Day of Prayer program on Thursday, May 7, at 7: pm. in the Crossroads Ministry Center at Ebenezer Mennonite Church, 8905 Columbus Grove Rd., Bluffton.
The event will include music and prayer, and will feature special guest Matt Huffman, former Speaker Pro Tempore of the Ohio House of Representatives.
