Nathan Sprunger: "We are happy to expand into Bluffton"

Sprunger Insurance Agency of Pandora has purchased Swiss Mutual Insurance Agency of Bluffton, according to Nathan Sprunger, owner of Sprunger Insurance.

“We are excited to have a greater presence in Bluffton. This is a great opportunity and we look forward to becoming part of the Bluffton business community,” said Sprunger.

Transition Bluffton's Tuesday evening program

Transition Bluffton hosts a presentation on bicycling, including topics such as bicycle commuting, how to carry things on your bike, and safe interaction between bikes and cars.

The talk is Tuesday, July 18 at 7 p.m. in the community room of Bluffton town hall. The presenter is Raymond Harner, co-owner of CG Pro Bikes of Bluffton. Anyone interested is welcome to attend.

Still time to buy 50-50 tickets; drawing is July 29

This is a current update of the 2016/2017 United Way of Bluffton, Beaverdam,
and Richland Township campaign. 

To date the 2016-17 United Way of Bluffton, Beaverdam and Richland Township has raised $22,110. That's  85.04% of the goal of $26,000. 

"We are also in the process of selling tickets for a  50/50 drawing, which will be drawn at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 29,  at the Farmers Marke," said Neil Reichenbach of United Way.

Masterpiece Signs, 902 N. Main St., next Bluffton Cars and Coffee event is Saturday, July 22, according to Tim Boutwell.

The event is an “informal gathering for enthusiasts and their cars.” The monthly cars and coffee event continues through October. It is always held on the fourth Saturday of the month.

Each event is from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on the following Saturdays:  July 22, Aug. 26, Sept. 23 and Oct. 28.

Boutwell said that it is open to all makes, models and vehicle years. There’s no charge to attend and door prizes will be given away.

Bluffton participates in this national awards program for the first time

The America in Bloom judges will be Bluffton all day Thursday and Friday of this week. Bluffton is participating in this national awards program for the first time.

A reception open to the public takes place at 6:30 p.m., on Thursday, July 20, at the Bluffton Sportsmen's Club on Spring Street.

Several substitute contacts on Monday's school board agenda

Bluffton school board will act on approval of its 2017-18 appropriations certificate on Monday.

The board will act on appropriations totaling $17,684,012. The action means the board has sufficient funds to meet contract obligations, payment and expenditures for the coming school year.

In other action the board will consider:

• Resignation of Eric Fleharty as assistant high school football coach

• Substitute custodian contracts for eight persons

• Substitute bus driver contracts for seven persons

Here's ODOT's high water update

The following highways in northwest Ohio continue to be closed or monitored due to high water. Highways listed are either currently closed or affected, but closed areas on each route will vary as flood levels change.

Check the OHGO app for real-time updates on restrictions and closures on state highways.

Residents should refer to their respective county sheriff’s office for information on local road closures. Motorists are reminded not to drive through areas of high water.

Hancock County

The Bluffton Sardines swim team and all their fans are in Kenton Friday and Saturday. It's the Western Ohio Aquatic League meet.

Art and poetry focus on transformation toward peace

Take a gun. Hammer it into a plowshare. Call it art.

That’s the premise of “From Swords to Plowshares: Our Process of Transformation,” art and poetry exhibit at Albrecht Gallery in the Sauder Art Center at Bluffton University.

SEVERAL PHOTOS OF THE EXHIBIT ARE BELOW -

The exhibit is open Thursdays through Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m. now July 30.

It is organized in response to guns into garden tools program held on campus during the Central District Conference MCUSA annual meeting on June 22.

2 to 10 p.m., with a band from 6 to 9 p.m.

Southgate Lanes second summer fest’ of the summer is Saturday, according to Derek Dukes.

The fest, from 2 to 10 p.m., takes place in the bowling alley parking lot, 9700 Dixie Highway.

Activities include corn hole and other outdoor games. A band will perform from 6 to 9 p.m. This month’s fest’ benefits Bluffton Diamond Sports.

“All proceeds from Saturday above our costs go to Diamonds Sports,” said Dukes.

The final summer fest is Saturday, Aug. 19, and it benefits the Bluffton Fire Department.
