Join Bluffton-Pandora's oldest tradition at 5 p.m. on New Year's Eve. New year's carolers will sing David Rothen's carols in German at Mennonite Memorial Home. This is a program of the Swiss Community Historical Society and the public is invited to participate.

To best understand our community, it's helpful to appreciate the musical gene of those who carry a Bluffton or Pandora birthmark.

A swearing in of Bluffton’s council winners from the Nov. 7 general election takes place at 10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 29, in the town hall, according to Laura Ewing, village fiscal officers.

Four council members who will begin their four-year terms are Jerry Cupples, Mitch Kingsley, David Steiner and Phill Talavinia.

Cupples, Kingsley and Steiner each served previously on council and are returning after a few years of absence. Talavinia already serves and was reelected to his seat.

Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Jenera, will hold two special services to close this year and welcome the New Year. 

• On Sunday, Dec. 31, there will be one service at 9:30 a.m. with no Bible Classes.  • On New Year’s Day, Monday, Jan. 1, a special service will be held at 9:30 a.m.

It’s a new year and the Bluffton Senior Center is ready with lots of programming.

Here’s what’s on January’s Center calendar. An attachment below lists all items at the Center next month.

January’s dinner meeting is at noon, Monday, Jan. 8.  The program includes photos of the Grand Canyon and Red Rocks trip by the Center earlier this year.

Louise Hampton is the volunteer of the year. The centerboard has chosen Louise, who served at the center’s librarian for over five years.

The Ricky Weyer estate and personal property auction originally scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 28, has been rescheduled.

The auction will now take place on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018. Watch the Icon for additional details.

University men, university women, BHS boys' varsity, BHS boys' JV

Four holiday basketball tournaments involving 16 games take place this weekend with Bluffton University men, Bluffton University women, Bluffton High School boys' varsity and Bluffton High School boys' junior varsity playing various opponents.

5.5 inches of snowfall Dec. 23-24; 8 degrees was low reading Dec. 25

Yes, it was and still is a White Christmas.

According to Guy Verhoff, Pandora weather observer, the area had 3.2 inches of snow on Dec. 23. Add to that 2.3 inches on Christmas eve, for 5.5 inches.

The temperatures hovered between 35 and 20 degrees on those two days, but on Christmas the freezer door opened and the high was 20 degrees and the low was 8.

An auction of antique and collectibles of Helen and the late Gerald Brooks, Bluffton, is scheduled at The Old Barn Auction, State Route 224, Findlay, this weekend.

A sale preview is Friday, Dec. 29, starting at 5 p.m. The auction starts at 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 30.

A. Pauline Klingler, 90, died Dec. 23, 2017, at the Mennonite Memorial Home in Bluffton.  Pauline was born July 14, 1927, in Gilboa to the late Thomas and Ida (Lowden) Pollock.  On Nov. 3, 1946, she married A. Roy Klingler who preceded her in death on April 20, 2000.

Pauline graduated from Blanchard Township High School near Gilboa. She was a homemaker and member of Ebenezer Mennonite Church and Gilboa United Methodist Church.
