(BLUFFTON) - The Lady Pirates have their eyes set on a Northwest Conference crown this season and the first league test came to Pirate Gymnasium Thursday evening in the form of the Crestview Knights.  Pirate junior Alivia Koenig sunk the second of two free throws to give Bluffton the winning point in a 40-39 victory to keep the Pirates perfect in conference play at 2-0.

Rameshwar P. Vohra, 87, died Dec. 13, 2017, at 9:09 p.m. at his residence. 

Ramesh was born Jan. 30, 1930, in Lylapur, India, to the late Pheraya Lal and Leeladevi Vohra who preceded him in death. He was raised by his father and step-mother Dayawanti Prakash Vohra. On June 2, 1956, he married Sunita Rani Vohra who preceded him in death on Dec. 4, 2016.

Rameshwar worked as an engineer in communications and signal machines. He later became a businessman in jewelry and furniture and then retired in 1990. 

Feb. 3 is Made in Ada Wilson Football Festival

FROM ADA ICON - It doesn’t matter who wins this year’s NFL Super Bowl.

Everyone wins at the party in Ada on Super Bowl Eve. It’s Saturday, Feb. 3. The party is the second annual Made in Ada Wilson Football Festival.

Meanwhile, Super Bowl LII takes place in U.S. Bank Stadium, Minneapolis, Minn.

Ada’s Feb. 3 festival celebrates Ada’s Wilson Football Factory, sole supplier of footballs for the NFL, and Ada as the football-making Capital of the World.

Like last year, the event ends with a large football drop at midnight in the Ada railroad park.

Nolan R. Younkman, 88 of Punta Gorda, Florida, and formerly of Lafayette, Ohio, died Dec. 14, 2017, at Tidewell Hospice in Port Charlotte, Florida.  Arrangements are incomplete at Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services in Bluffton.

Rev. Karol Farris, pastor of Bluffton Presbyterian Church

Rev. Karol Farris will celebrate her first Christmas as a pastor later this month.

This fall, Rev. Farris accepted the call as pastor of Bluffton Presbyterian Church. Her pastorate began in September and she was installed in November.

As a first-time pastor, she describes her position as an “on-going balancing act.”

Students at Bluffton Middle School have collected non-perishable goods for the Bluffton Food Pantry since November, according to Robin Ault, middle school teacher.

On Wednesday morning Bluffton University baseball team members picked up the items collected and delivered them to the food pantry at St. John's UCC.

Each of the grades, 6-8 had a goal of 500 items, but all exceeded this goal. The 6th grade collected 517, 7th grade collected 1,012, and 8th grade donated 982 items. This is a grand total of 2,511 items.

Bluffton Farmers' Market vendors held their annual Christmas gathering, a carry-in dinner with a side of business on Dec. 12.

Some 40 vendors and family members enjoyed a delicious meal that included many homegrown and homemade foods, discussed the 2017 market season and made a donation to the community that hosts them.

Vendors expressed their appreciation for Citizens National Bank, which provides the parking lot space used by the market at 102 S. Main St.

Work on railroad crossing Dec. 18-22

County Line Road (Orange Township Road 15) will be closed at the Norfolk Southern Railroad crossing near Lake Street next week.

The road will be closed at the crossing from 8 a.m., Monday Dec. 18, through Friday, Dec. 22, according to Jesse Blackburn of the village.

According to the company doing the repair, the road should reopen sometime on Friday, Dec. 22.

Six Bluffton musicians will perform with the Lima Area Youth Orchestra this weekend.

The performance is at 7 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 17, in the Lima Senior High School auditorium.

According to Rachael Lewis, Bluffton strings teacher, the following Bluffton students are in this year’s orchestra:
• Violins: Ana Neufeld Weaver, Amanda Speicher
• Viola: Lily Shadle
• Cello: Alyssa Speicher, Grace Paquin
• Bass: Lauren Speicher

Bluffton Lions Club announced plans for its spring pancake and sausage breakfast this month.

The event, held at the Bluffton Senior Citizens Center take placde Saturday, March 10. Tickets go on sale Feb. 1.
